  1. I was once in a discussion with policy makers about giving better loan terms based on walkability. Good idea. But they were measuring it as a straight-line radius. Draw a circle, count what's inside.

When I looked at the actual pedestrian network, the story is quite different! Not everything is accessible. Private roads, a highway with no crossing, cul-de-sacs forcing you around the block.

    I ran this analysis for four cities using #OSMnx + #OpenStreetMap = 💜

What city would you want to see next?

  2. Work from home. Scratch that, work from the park! Way better.
People and cities would be happier with a return to parks mandate, not a return to office.

  6. Back in 2011 I co-directed an #architecture studio with a good friend. We experimented with new ways to engage people and activate community life in our city. One example is the render in this post: an urban intervention designed to promote book sharing and reimagine #PublicSpace through a bit of #PlaceMaking.
Those experiments left me a with a lasting lesson: Build, stay curious, and follow creativity wherever it leads. That mix of curiosity and experimentation has shaped my not-so-linear career, and continues to guide me today.

I wrote a bit more about it in the latest issue of the newsletter: luisnatera.photo/006-why-side-

  7. I wrote a new post in my newsletter.

Some thoughts on the simple act of sitting, watching, and what it reveals about cities, strangers, and how we connect.

  8. I also checked out the Amsterdam Light Festival @AmsterdamLight and it was amazing. The light art installations combine technology with urban elements, it was a unique point of view of the city. luisnatera.com/posts/2023/1/20
