  6. Friends birthday this afternoon. Road trip into the city.

So it means an hour by car to #TTC #kipling station, then an hour on the subway to get downtown. All things considered not too bad for a 100km drive. (and saves #QEW congestion, parking downtown hassles)

Its weird on one hand "going into the city" is a whole-afternoon/evening commitment, on the other hand it seems like "oh Ill just pop downtown". I still have that mindset of when I lived in the Junction or up at Don Mills and popping downtown was only half an hour away.

You can move out of the city, but the city never really moves out of you.

  11. I was once in a discussion with policy makers about giving better loan terms based on walkability. Good idea. But they were measuring it as a straight-line radius. Draw a circle, count what's inside.

When I looked at the actual pedestrian network, the story is quite different! Not everything is accessible. Private roads, a highway with no crossing, cul-de-sacs forcing you around the block.

    I ran this analysis for four cities using #OSMnx + #OpenStreetMap = 💜

What city would you want to see next?

  21. I'm in Spokane, and lemme just say I love the 25 mph roads near parks, with the "SLOW DOWN" speed detectors along the way.

Now, if you can only get physical separators between auto & bike lanes ....

  26. I’d say I’m living a 15-minute city life right now. I have the following within a 15-minute walk:
    Hospital.
    Several supermarkets.
    A large cinema.
    Multiple restaurants.
    Takeaway food of every kind.
    Loads of bars.
    Public exercise facilities.
Two private gyms (which I don’t use).
    Large sports facilities.
    Swimming pools.
    An ice rink.
Fast public transport to Belfast and a train network.

Move to Dundonald. I was lucky enough to be born here 🥳

  31. "Today, Paris counts more than 50 self-contained “15-minute neighbourhoods” within its city limits."
    europeancorrespondent.com/en/r

    Best advertisement ever.

And no, it's not controversial in the UK: there are many 15-minute cities in the UK. What there is as well is an entrenched car culture that must end soon, because far from serving any need, only further stuffs the pockets of the rich.
