  1. Done 2 jars of cherries in alcohol and 1 of cherries in syrup, which is enough as I still have some from previous years. Next job is Hungarian style chilled cherry soup - 400g of cherries makes 2 portions.

  2. I've been trying to make sense of all the different tourist passes you can get for #Vienna (#Wien). As far as I can tell:
    * City card - small discounts, same as we get anyway for being old.
    * Vienna Pass - good value if you pack three attractions into each day, too hectic for us.
    * Vienna Flexi Pass (5 visits) - works out at ~€22 per attraction, which is often more than the old person's price.
We'll get 7-day transport passes, these break even after 9 journeys, which we'll likely be doing.

  3. Saw some broad-winged damselflies on my walk this afternoon, I think a male doing a courtship display to a female.

  4. Just had probably my shortest ever dental appointment. I'm pleased that the dentist noticed my gums are looking much healthier than 6 months ago. I bought an electric toothbrush soon after the last check up and it has really made a difference.

Less impressed that the dentist thought I was due for some X-rays, until I reminded him that he did a set last time.

  5. Turns out I have a #Cataract in my right eye, and will need surgery in the next five years. I'd noticed a colour balance difference between the two eyes a few years ago, which was probably an early symptom.

  10. Had a fun afternoon at novelty-automation.com/ today with a couple of chaps I was at university with. Tim Hunkin (who I hugely admire) was there fixing one of the machines but I felt unable to talk to him.

  11. RE: mas.to/@kt19weather/1157411676

As expected, my local sewage overflow has been polluting the Hogsmill river since 13:45.

  13. 34.1 mm of rain so far this morning, and my local sewage overflows are pouring into the Hogsmill river. The river's flow rate won't be increasing for days (if at all) as it takes time for the rain to permeate the ground and reach the springs in Ewell.

  15. Thanks to the man walking his dog who pointed out a shoal of fish in the Hogsmill river this morning. I've walked by the river many times but never spotted any fish before. And these were big - roughly 8 inches long - not the minnows I'd expect.

  16. @FourT4 I'm sure you've already seen it, but just in case...
Here's a list of NEM standards. The German language list is more comprehensive than the English one, and you only need the pictures.

  21. Another holiday was inspired by Julia Bradbury walking on the Bastei in Sächsische Schweiz. In 2011 we stayed in Stadt Wehlen, from where we walked up to the Bastei, down to Rathen, ferry across the Elbe, walked up to Rauenstein, down to Pötszcha, and ferry back to Stadt Wehlen.

  22. A couple more hours digging out the last compost in the right hand heap (it's got a paving slab floor, so I know when I've dug it all out), then shredding some of the brambles (until my shredder blocked because of convolvulus that went in with them). I'm now very hot and sweaty. Sweat running into bramble scratches is particularly unpleasant.

  23. Just released v2023.4.0 of #Photini, a simple #photography #metadata (#Exif, #IPTC, #XMP) editor.
    photini.readthedocs.io/en/late

This version adds "image regions", allowing the user to label parts of a picture. See iptc.org/std/photometadata/doc for more about image regions.

PS Photini also includes a #Pixelfed / #Mastodon uploader that reuses the metadata that's already been set for each picture.

  24. @budley Today's deep investigations of #IPTC standards reveal they have an entire vocabulary for different sorts of image regions. cv.iptc.org/newscodes/imagereg
One of these will be appropriate for storing the centre about which an image should be cropped, which is all I need for my #pixelfed uploader.
