I’ve used Hive Books off and on for a number of years as my antidote to Amazon and they are generally very good.

You can also choose to have a small percentage of your purchase donated to an independent local bookshop of your choice.

However, I have no idea if they can deliver before this Christmas.

  2. Done 2 jars of cherries in alcohol and 1 of cherries in syrup, which is enough as I still have some from previous years. Next job is Hungarian style chilled cherry soup - 400g of cherries makes 2 portions.

  3. @jim_easterbrook @opencage Seem to be mapped on #OpenStreetMap (not sure if from survey or from #HistoricEngland data), but could do with a bit of tagging refinement (note that even metal posts count as boundary_stone in OSM). Perhaps @BUnicycling can help.

I first went to my GP (because that's how you get a no nonsense hearing test in England) because I was having trouble hearing people in crowds, and sometimes in meetings

The hearing test initially showed I had the common high frequency loss but only in my right ear.
But the test also identified that I had quite severe tinnitus - I had 'kind of known' about the noise in my head, but had become used to it (also very common).
The Audiologist gave me a hearing aid (free with the NHS) that both nulled out the tinnitus and improved my hearing.

About 4 years ago a repeat hearing test showed that my hearing had deteriorated markedly in both ears - so now I have two little helpers!

The tinnitus can break through the hearing aids when it's particularly severe, but they've possibly saved my sanity if nothing else!

  5. These are instructions to accompany my Dapol Easi-Shunt to T-shank coupler adaptor design published on Cults3D.

The coupler bodies are in two parts: a “tail” that fits in a T-shank pocket and a “head” that replaces a Dapol coupler body.

    Painting

If you need to paint the coupler bodies it’s probably easiest to do so before removing them from the “sprue”. Don’t get any paint on the […]

There are little things one can still do without AC (Asking ChatGPT). But first, a word about blogging!

It was quite wonderful that after writing my post on installing the Photini app that I quickly got a comment from its developer, Jim Easterbrook. How does that happen? I’d guess he has a google alert for Photini. I just have to say that publishing a blog post, where it has a real honest […]

  12. Today's picture from my Flickr albums was taken in August 2022, on our summer holiday in Scotland. We visited my old friend Stuart who has a croft on the shore of Loch Ewe. This was the view from his house one sunny morning. It's a panorama from six photos.

  16. I'd always fancied having an orrery, and five years ago I made one from a kit. This picture from my Flickr albums shows the newly completed model. It only has the Earth and inner planets, and the sun is illuminated from inside. The paper and cardboard kit is made by AstroMedia. I had a bit of fun trying to paint a realistic looking Earth.

  17. Today's randomly chosen photo from my #Flickr albums is a panorama view from the Kanzel viewpoint near Bad Hindelang in Germany. I can't resist taking several pictures (seven in this case) whenever there's a wide view like this and stitching them together later with #hugin. Follow the link to see the full resolution version.

  18. Today's Flickr picture is one of the many interesting things to be seen when walking by the river Thames in London. My partner and I have walked both banks in stages over a period of a few years. This lifting (or bascule) bridge carries Rotherhithe Street over the entrance to Surrey Water.

  19. The nearest green space to where I live is alongside the Hogsmill river. When the weather is agreeable I like to get a bit of exercise by going for a walk there, and sometimes I take my camera. This picture from February 2020 shows that even in the London suburbs you can find a bit of peace and quiet.

  20. This picture from my Flickr albums is from my 2017 summer holiday. One of the places we stayed in is Bad Doberan, from where we rode on the "Molli Bahn" to Kühlungsborn and back. This steam hauled narrow gauge railway runs along the street in several places.

  24. Another random photo from my Flickr albums. This one is my model beam engine, constructed from a kit so I didn't have to do any machining, but the polishing and painting is all my own work. To give a sense of scale, the floor tiles are 25 mm squares. As Mastodon doesn't show a preview for Flickr pictures I've attached a small image directly. Click on the link to see a larger version.
