Well, the Librem 5 isn't something that I'd make as a first choice. It's expensive, but the switches are conveniently located on the outside, which makes for an adequate privacy phone. The switch of the baseband modem, however, addresses the ability to create a whole brand new IMEI - something that definitively identifies a phone as unique world-wide, effectively making it a brand new phone not seen on the global network before each time you put a new module in it.
As far as a phone that I would personally choose, my prerogative is for the #PinePhone, there's an updated model out now, but flipping the tiny dip switches does require removing the back cover, and at a great price point.
I agree, that simply turning off the cellular radio is a good way to go whenever you've got access to a trusted WiFi gateway. Something like #ZoiPer for #VoIP works nicely and you just connect for example, to your own #SIP provider, like your own #Asterisk server. The PinePhone is also a #Linux machine through and through, and that presents a whole host of other privacy benefits.
For most folks however, I think I would recommend a De-Googled Pixel with #CalyxOS or something with #GrapheneOS, because it's still #Android - the downside of that is you don't have physical electrical control over turning the baseband modem off. -

Well it's not so unique, is it?Why should you get in trouble if you make the client, not the infrastructure.
if millions of people switch to SIP-Phoning it doesn't bother #zoiper or #linphone
if billions of people start using mastodon it's no big deal for firefox or tusky (both clients for that network).
If thousands of people migrate to XMPP it's no problem for Gajim or Conversation.
So I'd say: It's not so unique 😛
