Of all the weirdo decisions taken in the #telecoms industry, I can't fathom the logic behind #Telcel blocking access to #VoWifi from #Starlink terminals.
In rural #Mexico there has been a massive uptake of starlink, such that in areas where there is a lack of direct mobile coverage from #2G, #3G, or #LTE towers, the most likely alternative is going to be a starlink.
So why then deny access to service for those customers connected in this way? After all, VoWifi calls are charged at the same rates as those routed over the mobile RAN (even as they don't actually use any resources on it)
Usually, #MNOs (#Mobile #Network #Operators) are blocking access to their #IMS over IP from outside the home country - in order, we presume to not have customers avoid the industry's outlandish "#roaming" charges. (there are some notable exceptions)
But in the case of Starlink, (as far as I can make out) - all the terminals in a national territory are routed via the ground station in that country. - I sort of understood this may be a requirement for operation?
So why not add starlink's #Mexican IPs to a whitelist for telcels?
Of course... we could all have been doing something else since long ago; #VoIP is a thing, VoWifi is just glorified VoIP, just as IMS is a glorified #SIP server.
But then there would not be so much #control...

Communications from legacy landline providers regarding service termination has been ... abysmally poor and inconsistent. Deadlines are neither clearly nor consistently communicated.
There Is A Place for a location-oriented phone service rather than personal mobile devices.
Phone spam is a massive problem in many places, though also very inconsistent. Those who are not presently experiencing the scourge 1) count your blessings and 2) just wait. Full VOIP seems to offer better controls for this than mobile comms.
Drop-in alternatives for landlines are ... not clear. I've come across ATAs, though in truth I'd probably prefer to upgrade at least some of the handsets.
As a Market Of One, what I'd very much like is a great deal of control and insight over incoming traffic. Some sort of VOIP server (I'm familiar with Asterisk, would be interested in others), and the ability to manage incoming calls (flat rejection, challenge, direct-to-voicemail, ring specific extensions, forward to mobile), offer SIP on mobile (outside the Android/iOS duopoly) ... and log and report/review activity and errors. Oh, and Because Reasons, intercept and play a Long Litany of Crimes to any incoming calls from specific bad-actor telcos, urging their customers to go elsewhere.
Oh: I've heard of issues with VOIP security and hijacking accounts for spam. Would like to avoid that.
