  1. BBC Micro Elite II contains a 3D landscape routine that uses Fourier synthesis, just like Lander and Zarch.

So what does this landscape actually look like?

Behold, the gentle slopes of planetary surfaces in Elite II, courtesy of Wolfram Alpha.

See here for more details of how this works: lander.bbcelite.com/deep_dives

  2. My colleagues are talking about ADFS.

They probably mean the boring Microsoft version.

I just keep thinking about playing Zarch on the school Archimedes.

  3. Following my earlier toot, here's a clip of David Braben's Zarch running under emulation (an 8MHz ARM2 CPU is being emulated here, the sort in the base Acorn Archimedes A3000).

(The sound is a bit wonky on this emulator capture, note.)

  4. Here's a little $8.99 Steam game that seems to seek to be a sort of remake or "inspired by" take on the classic Zarch / Lander / Virus from David Braben. It lacks the amazing control mechanics of the original, but is reminiscent in a number of ways.

    For Windows, macOS, Linux.

  5. @Crow74 It was indeed called Virus on the Amiga, Atari ST, etc. It was a simplified version of Zarch; the Acorn Archimedes was notably more powerful than the others, and couldn't quite handle Zarch.

I compared them a while back on my #blog.
