Most elected and appointed officials believe deep down that cars & drivers are the rightful owners of streets and that they must never be deprived of the use of their property.

Your city doesn't owe you a speedy commute, it owes you a safe commute. Every speedy commute your city built for people in cars is a deadly commute for people outside of them. #WindshieldBias

Every car in your city represents $8-12K/year being sucked out of your local economy instead of being spent on housing, goods & services. I wish more parking-obsessed retailers & elected officials understood this. #WindshieldBias #CarBlindness

You may have carbrain if you... [finish the sentence.] Thinking of compiling the best replies into a blog post, with full credit. So don't reply if you don't want to be quoted outside of Bsky. #WindshieldBias

This is one of the defining symptoms of carbrain: the inability to conceive of bicycles as a form of transportation and that the people who ride them are going from point A to point B for the same reasons you are in your car. #WindshieldBias

Here it is, the point at which driving became a right instead of a privilege. Blame Charles Reich. From "Why Nothing Works," by Marc Dunkleman. #WindshieldBias @[email protected]

A great example, thankfully canceled, of how the time of drivers is treated as a precious commodity that must be conserved at all cost. Meanwhile, the time of everyone outside of cars continues to be freely expendable. #WindshieldBias

It happened again this morning.
Maybe it’s time to ban all passenger vehicles in our urban core. People driving cars are obviously a threat to themselves and others.

Early today, when the streets were nearly empty, a personal passenger vehicle in #Portland appears to have blown a red light and caused a collision with a lightrail train.
People often blame people on bikes for causing collisions because they’re not well lit, not following traffic laws or behaving predictably.
If a train with intensely bright headlights, that literally runs on both rails & a schedule isn’t safe, maybe the problem isn’t people on bikes.

This article is pure victim blaming, while exonerating the driver for not fleeing the scene.

Those of you who know DOT guys (they're nearly all guys), do you think the success of #CongestionPricing in NYC will change their JustOneMoreLane culture? Or will they continue to rationalize cars first? #WindshieldBias

An absolute banger of an episode from the #WarOnCars podcast.
The way we talk about cars/tolerate others talking about cars, rather unsurprisingly to me, leads to bad outcomes.
I was leo_pointing.gif the whole time I was listening. Dr. Tara Goddard is brilliant.

RT @taragoddard Do Americans have "car brain"? Survey says yes! Super excited to share my new paper on #WindshieldBias in findingspress - I'll share some highlights [on Twitter], but it is only 1k-ish words, so you really should go read it there :)

A whole lot of people and cities need to stop expecting cyclists to endanger ourselves in order to convenience drivers.

@capntransit @estherxlwang @k80way oh that's so disappointing, I loved that magazine. Why do they have to be anti-urbanism? #WindshieldBias #urbanism #CongestionPricingNow

What motordom calls 'distraction' when we're on foot should be reclaimed as 'minding our own business.' Walking induces a relaxing, creative flow state that shouldn't be pathologized as 'distraction.'

I had such a nice afternoon walk to get coffee & go to the library in my dense walkable downtown minus the part that I nearly go hit in a crosswalk, on the sidewalk and the 2 other times cars acceleration towards me.
Slow the fuck down.

I wish more businesses and elected officials understood that every car in your city represents about $8K/yr getting sucked out of your local economy instead of being spent on housing, goods & services.

The people who fight the conversion of driving lanes, parking spots & parking lots into anything else are never accused of wanting to freeze a city in amber.

If your primary experience of the world is via private automobile, then everyone you encounter is an irritation, impediment, rival, or threat. This is why social bonds are so weak in America.

The ultimate absurdity in the US transportation system is that if you want to go to a nice place that isn't ruined by cars, you have to use a car.
