Iran’s account of the day added another layer. Earlier Sunday, before the U.S. strike, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson claimed Iran had “complete control” of the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to attack any vessel that tried to cross without permission. The spokesperson also said Iran had reached an understanding with Oman over managing the strait and dividing revenue generated from it, but accused the United States of obstructing and delaying that arrangement, according to reporting from Al Jazeera.
Those claims have not been independently verified, and Omani officials have not publicly confirmed the arrangement the IRGC described. Readers should treat the claim of “complete control” as an assertion by a combatant, not a verified fact.
A War Now in Its Seventh Month
The conflict began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with several senior officials. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes on Israel, American bases and U.S.-allied Gulf states. Since then the war has moved through several rounds of escalation and short-lived pauses, including a ceasefire that later collapsed.
Casualties have mounted on both sides over the course of the war, and the fighting has repeatedly disrupted oil markets and shipping through the Gulf. Sunday’s strike is a reminder that even after a month of quiet, the underlying conflict has not been resolved through negotiation or a durable ceasefire.
Washington’s Pivot Toward Sanctions
The strike lands just days after the Trump administration signaled a shift in strategy, saying it would lean more heavily on economic pressure, including sanctions threats against any country or entity that keeps doing business with Tehran, rather than continued military escalation.
