Died this day: 08/08/1984 (b. 02/28/1928) Walter Stone Tevis Jr. was an American novelist and screenwriter. Three of his six novels were adapted into major films: The Hustler, The Color of Money and The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Just think: there was a time when the man who wrote The Hustler – acclaimed, noir-ish novel about shooting (and sharking) pool – could also write the sci-fi classic, The Man Who Fell To Earth, and no-one gave him shit about his literary 'career arc'.

#FinishedReading this book on chess and substance abuse, which resonates in my household because my 12yo is getting into the former. It's beautifully written but very much a sports story so avoid if lovingly detailed descriptions of chess games doesn't sound like fun to you. The Netflix adaptation, which I saw last year, is extremely faithful. #Bookstodon @bookstodon #WalterTevis
