More art 🎨
I think these three may look lovely mounted together in the same frame using a mat with three openings...

Detailed drawings of flowers with deconstructed colors are now officially a series, I guess 😊
Directly drawing with liners is fun, there are no mistakes and no corrections, everything becomes the final drawing - and flowers and plants are a thankful subject because they can so easily be adapted from thw reference photo. Good to stop my perfectionist tendencies and just draw.

Ooooh, #PortfolioDay? Nice :D
I'm Victoria. I'm an astrophysics and artist doing scientific/academic illustrations.
I've recently published a book on black holes with my own illustrations (only in German so far, sorry!) and when on holidays, I love making small watercolour paintings of things I encounter (often buildings, sometimes plants). I post my art under #VicisArt here.

It was a bit of an adventure with the local post office in Santiago, but all seven postcards from this trip are now on their way to their owners (one in the USA, one in Spain, two in Germany and three in the Netherlands). Let's see if they arrive... 😬
The 8th one stayed with our host in El Chaltén.

I guess I'm now in my ink flowers + abstract colors era... 🌺✒️

For those interested: two intermediate steps. The reference photo for the flowers is from here: https://mastodon.social/@vicgrinberg/115763997661099562

Here is a thing I haven't told you about the trip: we are actually not really enjoying it. Some photos are amazing, but overall, it is underwhelming (and overpriced).
Oh well, at least I got to do some pretty art and to try some things out of mt comfort - this flowers happened from a photo, without a preparatory pencil drawing and I obviously tried a more abstract approach to colors.
-
If you think about doing art: do it!
Watercolour is not that hard to learn - there are books and tutorials on youtube or instagram (and possibly in the fediverse - please link!). You may not be perfect (actually, you definitely will not be, watercolor is an exercise of letting go of control & perfection), but you can make a few postcards & send then to people you thought you should get in touch with again.

Another rainy morning and the first postcard from the Chilean part of the trip!

Slow, windy morning means time for some art.

Guess who lost her pack with the good brushes & had to spontaneously buy some in a tiny village in the Andes? So yeah, I have super expensive artist grade watercolors & primary school grade brushes for the rest of the trip 🙃
That said: this one stays with our host who made the tiny house himself & fell in love with the painting. Hope it will make the next visitors happy looking at it!

A good reminder that the most important thing in doing art is to start.
Thw first card was a battle of will against myself, the second (this one) I easily fit into the two hours back in the hotel between visiting the radio astronomy institute and dinner.
Time to make more reference photos.

Took some time to relax and do art yesterday. Getting to know my new travel palette better.

Did not have the time to do any other art during the vacation, but at least I made a card for our lovely hosts here in Killarney!

It's only since Cecilia Payne's PhD thesis in 1925, that we know what the stars - and our Sun - are made of: mostly hydrogen.
Her thesis was described as ""the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy" and it extremely readable: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1925PhDT.........1P/abstract
Yet It took until 1956, 10 years before her retirement, for her to become full professor - because women were barred from becoming full professors at Harvard.
(Posted because she was born #OTD).

Bailed out on a hike (my vertigo did not like me today morning), doing some art instead.

We are celebrating Christmas at partner's parents with the same raclette grill as 20 years ago - which is pretty impressive, but not quiet as much as the Voyager spacecrafts 😅 Voyager 2 was launched on August 20, 1977 - still working, still teaching us new things about the most external parts of the solar system.
With many thanks to @schnedan for the idea to draw Voyager :)

Oh, apparently yesterday was #PortfolioDay and I missed it! I am Victoria and I am doing #SciArt, mainly focusing on astronomy & astrophysics (#astrodon) and on #academia
& research commentary. You can fine more of my doodles here: https://www.sternwarte.uni-erlangen.de/~grinberg/#doodles
And an introduction to my process & an encouragement for other researchers to do art here: https://mastodon.social/@vicgrinberg/111115356974247400

I'll be giving a version of the above talk 👆 in one of our seminars in less than one hour. Kinda nervous!

16/16
* collecting art supplies or learning new tools is a hobby of it’s own and not the same hobby as making art
* understanding of basics is helpful: how to build up a page? how do shadows work? how to colors work together? And that's it. I do hope you find it useful and maybe encouraging to try on your own!
-
1/16 This July, I gave an invited talk in the "Communicating Science Through Art" session at the European Astronomical Society annual meeting, organized by the amazing @theastrophoenix . And I thought it may be something that would also interest you #fediverse folks.
The aim of the talk was partly to give people insight into my why & how of my art. But mainly to encourage others to just try. In a very subjective manner.

Because we need to celebrate the #XRISM launch!
-
For all the folks starting their #PhD (or their master thesis) today - a reminder why your PhD advisor can solve a problem so "easily" ...
-
What next for this research?
1. Apply methods to more sources! Also to build a sample and test different star & binary properties e.g. https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2023A%26A...674A.147D/abstract & https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2021MNRAS.501.5646M/abstract
2. Refine methods (better statistics tools, take more effects into account ...) - e.g. https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2023arXiv230414201H/abstract
3. And of course we hope for better data with #XRISM and #Athena missions!#VicisAstro #XraysAreTheBestRays #SciArt #scicomm #wisskomm #VicisArt

And the last postcard of the Devon + Cornwall set. Also my favorite.
#Clovelly was... over-sugared is perhaps the right word. But the harbor was very cool (including some swarming fish), I got to pet a donkey and bought some handmade pottery. Not sure it would be worth driving and paying the parking fee, but it was a great mid-point for a hike!
-
And another one - St Ives has a lot of pretty buildings which were rather hard to photograph given the narrow streets and the amounts of people.
My friend thought it was too much, but I kinda loved the buzz of the (very touristy) town and the many little shops.
-
Of course most of the cards are buildings again. This one is from #Appledore - it was sunny when we entered the village and it poured when we were at the other end!
