  1. How is #AI reshaping the way we study the human past? A news article in the Communications of the ACM by Karen Emslie highlights how archaeologists are using #machinelearning and #computervision to uncover the stories of human culture—from detecting submerged WWII aircraft to revealing hidden words in carbonized scrolls.
AI is helping researchers identify ancient sites, analyze large and diverse datasets, and even virtually "unwrap" fragile artifacts. Though challenges like data incompleteness remain, the potential for discovery is growing fast. Read more: cacm.acm.org/news/researchers-

  2. New podcast episode!

We talked to one of the leads on the Vesuvius Challenge, which is driving the efforts to read the carbonized scrolls from Herculaneum. This is a fascinating project and producing really exciting results, and we very much enjoyed our in-depth discussion with Stephen Parsons about his work and the potential for future discoveries.

  6. I posted a while back about how they'd decoded words in some ancient carbonised papyri from Pompeii. Back then, they were very exicted because they'd deciphered one word: purple.

Now, they've deciphered 2,000 words. Two thousand!

  11. Mind-blown by this story about the outcome of the “Vesuvius Challenge”: how to read burned and carbonized papyrus scrolls that cannot be opened?

Well, make a 3D CT scan, use the images to virtually unfold, recognize the ink drops, and off you go. Amazing work by three students (from Berlin, Nebraska and ETH Zurich).

    Wonderful initiative by Nat Friedman.

Most recently he created, funded #VesuviusChallenge - $1M prize for reading an unopened #Herculaneum #scroll for the very first time. If we can uncover these #scrolls, we may be able to recover lost #gospels, forgotten #epics, and missing works of #Aristotle. #VesuviusChallenge : scrollprize.org/ #EpicurianTradition
