У современных радиолюбителей потрясающие возможности в плане получения информации, а многие аспекты работы на коротких волнах кажутся архаичными и попросту бесполезными. Мы привыкли жить в режиме онлайн с постоянным доступом к интернету, и это наложило свой отпечаток на то, как мы воспринимаем КВ-связь. И все же радует, что она продолжает развиваться и эволюционировать за счет внедрения цифровых видов связи. Сегодня я бы хотел рассказать о протоколе VARA, разработанном испанским радиолюбителем по имени Хосе Альберто Ньето Рос (Jose Alberto Nieto Ros) с позывным EA5HVK .

This is VarAC, a digital mode of communication over HAM radio that uses a software modem to decode audio signals over HF Radio. It reminds me of the old days of IRC and BBSes and it ticks all of my nerdy boxes. It's very high tech and somehow also very primitive.
I can have an ascii chat with someone with a radio and a piece of wire strung up as an antenna and reach all over the world. It fascinates me.

As of today, my laptop is now 2/3 complete, I've put the windows portion (
TAZOpticon) on and... Holy shit that's a lot of programs to install. At least like, #YAAC, #VarAC, and one other I'm probably forgetting will just immediately bind to the GPS COM port and get position updates, so that's cool.I uh, get to reformat my backup target as exFAT though, I'm NOT using #WSL2 JUST to get local machine backups. I might use WSL2 to try OP25 though.... But yeah. I doubt Borg will like exFAT as its repository FS (no journaling), but it's compatible. (I'll explain the nuance of windows being broken, later)

Playing around with FreeDATA (https://freedata.app/) app on 40 meters. What a nice modern application, can operate keyboard-to-keyboard QSO's and leave messages from a remote PC using a webbrowser. Seems like a nice modern alternative to #JS8CALL. It's based on the open source #Codec2 which is also used for #FreeDV and #M17. No need for proprietary software modems like #VARA anymore. If you like stuff like #VarAC or #JS8 give this a try! #hamradio #ham #freedata

I'm kind of getting back into #JS8call. Cautiously, and with an eye out for the wackos. And I'm hopeful for some renewed development, but we shall see. We've got a local club (which I joined) using it on 40m.Though I like having keyboard QSOs on #VarAC much better
