  2. The billionaire tax needs to be made THE litmus test for all Democratic candidates for office.

Corporate Democrats have been the root failure mode of the Democratic Party since at least Bill Clinton.

We must remove the corporate Democrats from power right after we remove Trump from power, or we will just get an even worse Trump in the near future.

If a candidate is not willing to support a billionaire wealth tax, then we know for sure they are a corporate Democrat and should not be elected.

  5. @Nonilex

No, that's not what #CitizensUnited did, though there is so much misinformation about the ruling.

In the ruling, unlimited expenditures was part of what was asked for, the SCOTUS refused, putting limits at the core of the ruling it handed down.

These stories of unlimited power handed to corporations are just sensationalized clickbait. They don't reflect what the ruling actually said, often getting it exactly backwards.

  6. #USPolitcs #Wicked #MovieCharacters #TFGPeople

    Try this on for size.
It occured to me the peopel in the curerent admininstration are all in the movie/musical about Wicked.

Yes, I used an AI to use proper terms and summerize (I rarely do this just FYI)

Wizard of Oz Charismatic illusionist, figurehead of power Donald Trump – maintains control through spectacle, propaganda, and illusion

Madam Morrible Propaganda enforcer, spins lies to support Wizard is Pam Bondi/Ice Barbis – loyal defender, messaging enforcer

Glinda Popular, ambitious, complicit but pragmatic are the Rank-and-file GOP members – go along despite knowing corruption, driven by ambition

Elphaba Branded “wicked,” principled resister is the opposition/whistleblowers/protestors – vilified truth-tellers, “No Kings Day” activists

Fiyero Starts complicit, defects to resist is the Defecting GOP members – break ranks, choose principle over ambition

Nessarose Rigid, insecure, clings to power are the hardline loyalists – double down on Trumpism out of ideology or fear

Boq Innocent citizen, transformed into Tin Man is the Ordinary citizens/minor players – dehumanized, reshaped into tools of the movement

Dr. Dillamondrepresents the Marginalized intellectual, silenced by regime Immigrants, marginalized groups, resisters – targeted and stripped of voice

Flying Monkeys Enforcers of Wizard’s will Stephen Miller, JD Vance, others – policy architects and attack-dogs who intimidate dissent

I'm sure there's countless movies and plays and book that fit, but Wicked seems topical now.

  7. It's important to remember that the majority of Americans aren't politically active at all; then of the remaining 30-40% a lot of them will just vote however their parents voted. #uspolitcs

  8. Gotta say, it looks like the Dems handed the baddies a win here....again.
The Voters stepped up, Chuck Schumer and the Dirty Eight did not.

    Has he resigned yet?

  9. I really could not care less about yet another think piece titled "I study Fascism, and this is why I left America".

Good for you. Those of us who have not fled America are trying to clean up the problem you ran away from, so you'll have to forgive me if I pass over the opportunity to read your profound wisdom on the matter.

  10. The thing is,.... I don't trust Chuck Schumer to play this, and it's not even my country but I can see it...

  11. remember #DickCheney truly. as he was and by the fruits of his evil actions, not by what mainstream media wants us to remember him. i remember the "war on terror" and i grew up in during/in its aftermath.

i saw the damage abroad, learned about the deaths it/he caused, and the lie it was started on; #WeaponsOfMassDestruction (WMD) in Iraq, was a fabrication. i didn't/don't appreciate being lied at from every angle, even if i was a four year old

even then, the usa had/has actual #WMD! #uspolitcs

  12. If you follow US politics, you will know that a critical food assistance program is being suspended as the country heads into cold weather. TL;dr People are going to die.

If you can support people you know directly, please do it.

If you can donate to US food banks in absolutely any region, you can save lives.

I don't know if this will work, but I want to give it a try:

If an incentive would help you to donate to a food bank, I will happily give a free audiobook to anyone who donates.

Send me a DM of your receipt with your personal details blacked out if you need to, or just tell me you've donated (this is Fedi, I trust you), and let me know:
    1. The title of the book you'd like. (A link to my catalogue follows at the bottom of the post.)
    2. If you want a redemption code for Audible US or Audible UK (my only options; you can change your browser setting or app country code to make them work if you are in other regions).

*I am largely offline at the moment but will do my best to respond within 24 hours.

Lives genuinely hang in the balance. Please do what you can, whatever that might be.

  14. Last night on the train, I listened to Rachel Maddow interview former Vice President Kamala Harris about her forthcoming book “107 Days”. It was the first extended political interview I’ve listened to in many months.

  15. "A society under “number go up” tends towards evil. The men and women behind an excessively high rate of return often make deeply sinful and immoral choices, little different than the Confederate plantation owners did in whipping slaves or lords in castles did when abusing serfs. That they do it with spreadsheets doesn’t make it better. (We even use old terminology: I know of several people in a large health insurance conglomerate who set policies to deny care whose nickname is “the three witches.”)

And that’s why Jeff Epstein’s story is so compelling, it expresses this evil in a way that we all understand. On Sunday, I wrote about the oddness of the story, how an elite sex trafficker convicted of procuring children as prostitutes was friends or associates with everyone from Trump to Bill Clinton to Larry Summers to Bill Gates. Epstein represents how elites live in one moral universe where evil bacchanalia is rampant, while the rest of us live in a different more normal one. Every society has elites, and there are always weird things that elites do. But America, and the West, have reached a point where there is increasingly deep resentment and cynicism about this divide."

  18. Holy Smokes. I knew it was bad, but this bad?

    A few choice quotes:

    1. Sounds like Harris really took the urban and black vote for granted...

in Philadelphia, many of the field offices “were filthy and lacked basic supplies like tables, chairs, cleaning products and printers, staff members said,” with city campaign staffers “being forced to raid the campaign’s better-stocked suburban offices or to raise money independently.” That is when they even had field offices, and in many predominantly Black neighborhoods “campaign staff members were operating out of public parks, grocery-store parking lots and church basements.”

Even when there were T-shirts, they could be slapdash (one box of them said “Harriz-Walz”). A “get-out-the-vote bus tour for [Pennsylvania’s] Black mayors” had its funding pulled without explanation. The head of a pro-Harris group “recounted frantic campaign staff members in Philadelphia, Detroit and North Carolina calling him in the final weeks of the race to say they did not have enough money to provide food or water to volunteers.”

In Georgia, a county party chair “said the Harris campaign’s get-out-the-vote operation had been nonexistent, even as he had pleaded for resources.” Black staff members reportedly felt that the Black vote was being taken for granted, and when they aired their complaints in a post-election call, Harris’s deputy campaign manager “told staff members that talking to the press would ruin their career prospects.

    1. Lavish spending with little substance

“paying for an avalanche of advertising, social-media influencers, a for-hire door-knocking operation, thousands of staff, pricey rallies, a splashy Oprah town hall, celebrity concerts and even drone shows.”

“the campaign spent around $900,000 to book advertising on the exterior of the Sphere venue in Las Vegas.” YouTube host Roland Martin received $350,000 from the campaign for a “media buy,” at least part of which appeared to consist of an interview on his show that racked up under 130,000 views.

Democratic megadonor John Morgan says that consultants saw the giant pool of money as being like getting the “keys to the candy store,” and concludes that much of the money was essentially stolen, albeit legally.

Harris made the same error that Hillary Clinton did in 2016, deploying resources in states like Texas that she was clearly not going to win that could have instead been used in states she desperately needed to win. “We spent money in stupid ways because we had a really bad strategy,” a former DNC consultant told Puck. They even bought an expensive TV ad in Florida, a state Harris knew she wouldn’t win, just to “troll” Donald Trump.

Other aspects make the Harris campaign look like little more than a multi-level marketing scheme. For instance, they spent “$111 million in online ads seeking donations,” in other words ads asking for money to pay for more ads asking for money!

The article is pretty scathing, worth reading. Don't give money to grifters.

  19. Never forget that ever since the fall of #roe, #abortion has been expanded at every chance the #people are given to weigh in directly.

Every time it has been restricted, it is by unelected or unaccountable #Christofascists bringing back laws from the literal 1860s.

If a #nationalban happens, it will be because of #comstock_act rules, and it will be done by people actively hiding their motives to do so. #liberals cannot be trusted to act as a bulwark in this, but #ballotinitiatives are a place to start.

  20. In Part 3 of my deep-dive into the "He Gets Me" Superbowl Jesus ad, I address questions raised by readers, then get into image six: the alcoholic.

They're selling "reconciliation," but as explained in Part I, they don't actually believe in that. So I'm taking apart what their images say and mean to their own people.

Fair warning, today I am partially thwarted by the incredibly, and I really do mean incredibly in the vintage sense of "their denials are not credible," bad use of AI tools. There is genuine wow here, and maybe that's appropriate given that it's the weekend.
