The Associated Press said Toby Keith played for a USFL farm team. He did not play for the USFL, and the USFL never had a farm team. The team in question was the Oklahoma Drillers of the United Football Teams of America, a very semiprofessional league in the early 1980’s. That league is defunct.

Speaking to someone with knowledge, the likely reason that the UFL decided to keep the Roughnecks name but utilize the Gamblers team had to do with existing contracted vendors. There is no need to change any agreements/contracts the team might have structured if the name stayed the same. In other words, it might have been more straightforward for the UFL to stick with what they have.

- Players from dissolved teams will stay under contract to their respective leagues

Due to the March 30th start time, NBC has confirmed it will not carry any games from the merged league. This leaves both ABC and FOX as broadcast partners.
