“Google AI workers unionize against tech giant's role in US, Israeli war crimes”

@iran“On 6 May, Google DeepMind workers in the UK asked management to recognize the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite the Union as their workplace representatives, as staff prepare to challenge the use of Google AI technology by the US and Israeli militaries.
‘We don’t want our AI models complicit in violations of international law, but they already are aiding Israel’s genocide of Palestinians,’ one DeepMind employee said.”

My ballot paper in the Unite the Union elections has just come through.
Now which candidates want to stop funding Labour (and not just the 'blank cheques' talk of the recent leadership), understand that climate change and the environment is the biggest threat we face long term and want to fuck with the status quo in general shaking trees until we start to see some change?
I have votes in West Mids, service industry and disability sections.

Thank you for reading. Thank you also to all of the UCU branches and members who have given us ongoing and solid support. This is your union. We hope there’s something meaningful left when you emerge from your current struggles.

We might be on day 11 of our strike action, but we’re not letting up.
From North West region in Manchester, up to Scotland and back down to Gateshead and Sheffield, out members were out in force this morning.

I left #UniteTheUnion a few years ago because of their stupid internal politics. Being "more leftier than thou" seemed to be more important to the well-paid union leadership than its members were. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cedyy520v32o

We hope the employer can quickly reconsider its approach. We don’t want to take this action, especially when too many UCU members desperately need our support right now. Be assured we remain committed to finding a resolution which can see us calling off any further action and ending our dispute.
-
After our employer ended Acas talks last week, supported by Unite officials we tried to secure a last minute agreement to bring them back to the table. This could have led to action being paused. Sadly no written proposal was presented for consideration. Threats to our branch officers remain.
-
With work-related stress absences & casework levels at alarming levels, widespread dysfunction, and too many staff leaving, unable to continue, we need our employer to realise they must work with and not against us if they are to make UCU a place where we are all proud to work.
-
We deeply regret our strike action which begins today in our Campaign for A Safe and Professional Workplace. With our dispute now a year old we remain resolute that the toxic bullying culture, racism and victimisation that our members and officers are experiencing must end.

It turns out the rest of us *can* join a union.
It looks like #UniteTheUnion is the most obvious choice. But I'm new to this.
So… Those of you more knowledgeable than I… Should I join Unite, i.e. the same union my employer recognises? Is there one that’s best for financial services workers? Is there a benefit to picking one over another?

This is the third time in less than 18 months that members have voted to strike. It’s only when we have taken or threatened serious strike action that we’ve moved the employer a step closer to resolving issues, so we sincerely hope that further strike action is not necessary this time.

After our employer refused to pause their restructure until the agreed Organisational Review is complete, we produced a critique of their plans based on members’ feedback. This includes initial analysis of the impact on delivery of support for UCU members.

🚨STRIKE ACTION🚨
After our employer refused to pause their restructure plans in order to first resolve our ongoing dispute over a Safe and Professional Workplace, members today voted overwhelmingly to call strike action as soon as possible.

-
We’ve asked the employer to pause the proposed restructure pending the resolution of our dispute and completion of the agreed independent Review into Organisational Culture. If we’re to have a restructure it needs to be done in the right way.

-
Beyond the ongoing dispute, the restructure comes against a context of cancelled JNCs & safety meetings, refusals to meet outside ACAS & continued breaches of agreed policies, including around fixed-term contracts. Yet suddenly they find the capacity to rejig the deckchairs.
-
Many members are upset and angry that they found out about changes to their jobs via a document posted on the staff intranet, which shows a complete disregard for staff well-being. We also don’t believe the 30 day consultation period is anywhere near sufficient.
-
🚨Employer ignores dispute to rush restructure🚨
Instead of focusing on resolving our long-standing dispute over a racist, dysfunctional & toxic workplace, our employer yesterday announced a significant restructure that will impact nearly a quarter of staff, some significantly.
-
Our employer has confirmed pay will remain frozen as they are “choosing” to not hold pay talks while we remain in dispute over our campaign for a safe & professional workplace. This decision breaches staff employment contracts.
Astounding to find ourselves in a 2nd live dispute.
-
The dysfunction within our workplace is directly affecting our members. Sadly, it is also affecting our ability to support UCU members. If our employer doesn’t accept that things need to change, then we will, regretfully, be left with no choice but to take action.
-
Following the @timeshighered article this week which set out the lived experiences of our Black colleagues working at UCU, the Unite Committee sends our solidarity and allyship to all our members who have shown real courage in speaking out.

It now seems clear that our employer has little commitment to ending our pay dispute after they failed to find a date to meet again until two weeks after the timeframe set out in our agreed Disputes Procedure. This procedure is designed to prioritise finding resolution.
