#Celtic #MythologyMonday: `At #Beltaine in times long gone, the whole of Ireland was plunged into darkness as all fires were extinguished. Then, two huge bonfires were lit on the Hill of #Uisneach; these represented Eriu’s eyes, with which she watched over all of #Ireland.`

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: `Uisneach derives from the #Irish word for water, uisce, and a god of the Tuatha de Danann named Nechtan. Not a great deal is known about Nechtan; the name is possibly a variant of Nuada Argetlam, or some say another name for the Dagda. The Hill of #Uisneach is said to be located near Nechtan’s well, which also happens to be the source of the River Boyne.
The interesting thing about Nechtan’s Well, is that it might also be the same pool where Fintan, the Salmon of Knowledge, ate the nuts which fell from the nine enchanted hazel trees into the water, and thus acquired his knowledge.`

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: `King Tuathal Techtmar was supposed to have lived at #Uisneach in the first century AD, as was the Dagda, High King of the Tuatha de Denann before him. #Lugh Lamfháda was said to have been drowned in the lake at the summit which is named after him, and buried beneath a cairn beside it.`

`#Uisneach will always be most famous for its associations with the fires of Bealtaine. This quarter day falling on 1st May is half way between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. The #Celts and the ancient #Irish celebrated it as the first day of summer.` #Celtic

#Celtic #FolkloreSunday: In mythology, Fintan the Ancient White One was said to be the first person to arrive in Ireland after the Great Flood. He planted the Branching Ash Tree of #Uisneach, also known as the Tree of Enchantment. This tree was sacred to #Lugh, and the druids often made their wands from ash, as it was associated with rebirth, divination, protection, wisdom and spiritual knowledge.

#Celtic #FolkloreSunday: Other monuments on the Hill of #Uisneach besides the Ail na Mirean, or Stone of Divisions, consist of the remains of circular enclosures, barrows, cairns, a holy well, and two walkways, or ancient roads, all spread over a two km area, but they are not quite so easy to identify as the Stone of Divisions.

#Celtic #FolkloreSunday: `The Ail na Mirean, or Stone of Divisions, is a limestone boulder standing six metres tall and estimated at weighing thirty tons. It sits on the south west side of the Hill of #Uisneach in a circular enclosure. It is said to be situated where the borders of #Ireland’s five provinces, Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Ulster and Mide met. Nowadays, there are only four provinces, ancient Mide becoming the Counties Meath and Westmeath.`

#MythologyMonday for #EarthDay2024: `The green island at the far western periphery of Europe bears the name of its earth goddess, #Ériu. Because Ériu promised greater prosperity than did her sisters, the chief bard of the Milesians, Amairgin, decided to call the island after Ériu.
It was at the sacred central mountain, #Uisneach, that Ériu greeted the invaders. One, Donn mac Míled, replied to her demands with insults, and Ériu calmly sentenced him to death; he drowned shortly thereafter, indicating that Ériu had control over the seas as well as the land.`

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: „Just as there were five provinces, with five roads leading to them from Tara, there were also five great trees of #Ireland. They were Bile Uisnigh, the ancient tree at #Uisneach; Bile Tortan at Ardbreccan in County Meath; Craobh Daithi in County Westmeath; Eo Rossa, a yew at Old Leighlin in County Carlow; and Eo Mugna, an oak at the mouth of the Shannon, Co. Meath.“

Generally, the #druid #Mide is associated with lighting the great fire on the #HillOfUisneach, Co. #Westmeath. Another legend credits the igniting of the #Uisneach fire to the #druid #Delbáeth, from whose blaze 5 great points of light streamed forth.

„The ancient peoples of #Ireland celebrated their major festivals with fire. Is this in honour of their sun Gods and Goddesses? According to the Lebor Gabála Érenn, an ancient manuscript detailing Ireland’s waves of invaders, the first #Bealtaine fire was lit on the Hill of #Uisneach by the Nemedian #Druid, #Mide. Although ‘Druidical rituals’ were said to have taken place, there is no mention of sun-god worship.“

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: `The lighting of the #Beltane Fire on the Hill of #Uisneach is one of #Ireland’s oldest traditions. In ancient times, a great assembly would gather on the Hill to witness the fire being lit by the High King of Ireland. The Beltane Fire is traditionally seen as marking the arrival of Summer in Ireland and a symbol of the re-birth & rejuvenation of the land after the long Winter months. Once the fire was lit on the Hill of Uisneach, fires would be ignited on sacred hills all across Ireland.`
