Light opening (center of image) above the entrance to the passage at Newgrange.
For a few days around the winter solstice, a ray of light shines through this opening into the chamber at the end of the passage at sunrise.May 2014

The entrance of the Newgrange passage tomb north of Dublin (3,200 BCE). On winter solstice the sun enters the smaller passage above the doorway and illuminates the central chamber quite a distance down the corridor. Most of the rocks in the interior and many outside have elaborate carvings. It took several generations to build, and many earlier ones to determine the alignment with the solstice.
It was my second time to be inside the chamber, and each time I have been blown away.

Winter solstice in Newgrange in Ireland. Newgrange is one more ancient passage monument aligned for the sun to traverse a long passage and illuminate an interior chamber on the winter solstice.
Thinking of it today, but also looking forward to visiting it again in early 2024.
