Simon Hanes: Tsons of Tsunami
Thank goodness Tzadik releases are available to stream so now everyone has access to wildly creative music like this. Hanes is a sonic polymath, at times making the heaviest shit imaginable, others thoughtfully melodic. This is a little bit of both, but with lots of great vibraphone. Book of Angels, Volume 9 : Xaphan
This one is performed by one of my favourite bands : Secret Chiefs 3.
They blend Surf Rock, Cinematic scores, Metal, electronic music and middle east influences.
Quite a weird bunch with a strong interest in the history and philosophies of occultism.
Their music is really one of a kind and they made Zorn's compositions really theirs.

Book of Angels, Volume 14 : Ipos
The performing band here is The Dreamers, which the "surf rock" band of the Zorn galaxy (Still with Marc Ribot on guitar, Cyro Batista on percussion, Trevor Dunn on bass and Jamie Saft on keyboard)
A little bit under Lucifer in terms of quality, but still a great album, though there is one other Dreamers album I prefer (we'll see it a bit later)

Now a few albums from the Book Of Angels series (aka Masada Book 2), but first allow me a little Wikipedia quote from Zorn's page about this series :
In 2004, Zorn began composing the second Masada Book, The Book of Angels, resulting in an additional 316 compositions. Zorn explained:
After 10 years of performing the first book, I thought "Maybe it'd be nice to write some more tunes." And I wrote 300 more tunes. When I started writing those it was "Let's see if I can write a hundred songs in a month this time." I've been working on these scales and playing these tunes all this time. In the back of my head somewhere are lodged all kinds of new ideas. Let's see if I can come up with 100 tunes in a month instead of in a year. So in the first month, I popped out a hundred tunes; the second month, another hundred; in the third month, a third 100 tunes. I had no idea that was going to happen.
So yeah. He composed 300 tunes in 3 months. 100 tunes per month. The man is a monster.
With that out of the way, here's my first pick :

Each volume of this series has the name of a demon. And he chose Lucifer for this one. The main demon. For the main piece. Because this album is a pure masterpiece. Not just among Zorn's discography, but as what I think is one of most important piece of music of this century. It's one of these "music I would bring on a desert island" albums.
The band here is akin to a chamber orchestra with a modern twist, and it definitely sounds as such, with the addition of percussions and guitar.
As often we'll find Cyro Batista on percussions, Marc Ribot on guitar, Greg Cohen on bass, Mark Feldman and Erik Friedlander on violin. The tunes are highly melodic, swinging from jazz to surf to classic. I can't emphasize enough how essential this one is.
And, well... of course this one is not available. I hope it will be soon.

Electric Masada : At The Mountain of Madness
This one is a bit on the heavier side. Drawing on the "Masada" corpus of composition, the band give free reign to its raw tendencies.
The tracks usually start with a good 2 to 3 minutes of noisy free jazz before jumping into the theme, which provokes a great sense of release.
I particularly enjoy the versions of Lilin.
Among the musician on this album: Cyro Baptista, Trevor Dunn (of Mr Bungle fame), Jamie Saft, Marc Ribot...
Though you could think that, with such a title there would be a Lovecraft connection, there isn't.

Muddy World : Finery of the storm
This one is part of the New Japan Section for which John Zorn produced albums from the underground japanese scene.
It's an instrumental Math Rock / Post Rock album. It seems that it is the only album of the band, but one of my favourite Tzadik release.

The Song Project (Live at Le Poisson Rouge).
This is a recording of a live show which gather several of Zorn's compositions on which lyric were added (most notably by Sean Lennon).
This was a project that Zorn did for his 60th birthday. Around him are several of his usual partners in crime (Jesse Harris, Mike Patton, Sofia Rei, Marc Ribot...).
It's quite accessible and cover several genre.
