  1. I was at the International Organization of Lace Convention last week, and there was an announcement about this Study Group for #Torchon #BobbinLace if anyone is interested.

DM me for the email contact with Sylvia--this is not my group.

  2. If you like #torchon #BobbinLace, you might want to see this little video I did about a couple of really terrific books on this lace style.

One happens to be on special sale right now. I just accidentally found it recently and bought several for me and friends because we've wanted it--but you can't find it anywhere.

It was easier to show it in a video than describe it in text form.

  4. Someone challenged me to make the #Torchon page better in #Wikipedia, so I started to work on it today.

Still needs work, but it's no longer in the mid #19thCentury anymore. Now with color! Current projects! Modern art!

  5. Oh, wow. Someone has uploaded the actual #BobbinLace samples of the #Torchon lace company.

    Fascinating.

Digital archives are like tide pools. New stuff keeps getting washed in, so you have to go back and look again....

    Wonderful.

  6. @tstooth This is technically a series of tapes, which swirl around. Then later there is a join step with a Dieppe #torchon ground between them.

I am not sure my joining or "sewings" skills are up to par yet. But that will be necessary to overcome!

  7. The prompt for an upcoming #BobbinLace competition in our local group is "By the sea". I've been thinking on some sea-related things, and found this pattern. It won't be my entry, but it was fun, like working a sketch, but in thread....

The sun bead was a fail. I was hoping the rays would look less...meh. But I liked the cloud beads.

  8. My obsession with beads continues. I have made another bracelet, but this time with gold thread. I think I'd like to do a more delicate seed-bead version with this thread now too.

It was just beads I had around, I didn't realize 'til later that it was Ukrainian-flag adjacent!

  9. #WIPWednesday My #torchon #BobbinLace with beads is mostly done. It's a bracelet, and I need to figure out some kind of clasp to use. But I'm pleased with the way it came out.

Thrift store beads and eBay black silk thread for a nice wearable item.

In the #lace community, it's custom to wear something you have made. But almost all of my other lace is on #18thCenturyFashion, which is not right for regular events...

  10. Before I started the new #knitting, I did finish this #BobbinLace piece. But it has to rest on the pillow a bit before you take it down.

It's my first piece attempted with beading. And you do have to learn some bead management. It does take a bit longer. And wow, is it heavy now! I'm used to my lace being like a feather--heh.

The next chapter in this book (Jan Tregidgo's "#Torchon #Lacemaking) is a bracelet, which is my real goal. Something I can wear.

  11. I did bring my current #BobbinLace project though. It's the first time I've really used beads.

It's a lot of beads. But it's just a sample bookmark sized piece. I'm getting a feel for how to work with beads and how to select for size and placement. Note to self: fewer beads. Maybe smaller too. #torchon

  12. 2/2 So this is my calash #BobbinLace progress. This is made with white linen, which is quite stiff. I think it will be a nice trim for my wool cape that I'm working on as well (as much as I love a calash, I'm not up for that--and I need a cape).

So the plan is to make a couple of yards of this. I don't even know how much I need because I didn't finish the cape yet. I'm using the Burnley and Trowbridge short cloak pattern.

  13. 1/2 Heading out later, but as the last wave of #HurricaneNicole remnants is still moving through, I'll show you the current #BobbinLace project before I leave.

My current piece is a replica lace. I copied the pattern from this #18thCentury #calash in the Historic New England collection.

I took a class in #torchon design recently, and this was one of my projects--how to diagram the pattern and represent it.
