Sadly, English, late romantic era composer, trombone player and music educator Gustav Holst (September 21, 1874- May 29, 1934)🇬🇧🏴 came to resent the popularity of “The Planets” b/c he felt that it left his other works to be overlooked. This meant that when Pluto was discovered in 1930 he declined to compose a new section for the new planet.

Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
I listened to a Proms performance of Gustav Holst’s The Planets the other night. It’s a piece I’ve heard dozens of times, but it was definitely the first time that I felt the most resonance with the Fifth movement, “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age“. According to Wikipedia, this was Holst’s favourite section. It comprises three parts, “a slow processional which rises to a frightening climax before fading away as if into the outer reaches of space”. The central part has a touch of Charles Ives about it, I think.

Musical Interlude: Listened to an old favorite today, Holst's "The Planets." A fun work, based on astrology, not astronomy, but fun with its musical variations. (Holst himself came to resent it, as it was eclipsing his other works.) This piece is a favorite of mine; it perfectly reflects a D&D character I used to play, a bumbling, self-important warlock named Nox.
"Uranus, the Magician," composed by Gustav Holst, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Susanna Mälkki.
