John Challenger🇬🇧 is a pianist, composer and Organ scholar. He is the long serving Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Salisbury Cathedral. Musical Interlude: Listened to an old favorite today, Holst's "The Planets." A fun work, based on astrology, not astronomy, but fun with its musical variations. (Holst himself came to resent it, as it was eclipsing his other works.) This piece is a favorite of mine; it perfectly reflects a D&D character I used to play, a bumbling, self-important warlock named Nox.

There are multiple English Heritage site blue plaques dedicated to important locations in Holst’s life like at St Paul's Girls' School in London where he wrote “The Planets” over the course of a few years while teaching/living there.

Holst was an avid naturalist and after being introduced to the concept in the early 1910s: an astrologer. “The Planets” is based on his interest in horoscopes and astrology and likely the 1912 book “How to judge a nativity, Part II: The Art of Synthesis” by famed astrologer Alan Leo which can be read for free here (https://archive.org/details/artofsynthesis00leoa/mode/2up)
