  1. Sadly, English, late romantic era composer, trombone player and music educator Gustav Holst (September 21, 1874- May 29, 1934)🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 came to resent the popularity of “The Planets” b/c he felt that it left his other works to be overlooked. This meant that when Pluto was discovered in 1930 he declined to compose a new section for the new planet.

  5. Täällä tänään. #Piippuhylly'llä tietty kuten aidot musiikin ystävät, joilla ei ole varaa maksaa itseään orkesterinjohtajan pallin viereen. #Lahti #Sibeliustalo #musiikki #GustavHolst #Planeetat

  6. Joululahjaksi saadut #Lippupiste'en lahjakortit on sitten saatu käytettyä loppuun: ostin lipun (1 kpl, ei seuraa 😢) Lahden sinfoniaorkesterin konserttiin , jossa soitetaan #GustavHolst'in #Planeetat. Konsertti sattuu juuri lomaviikkoni alle torstaiksi 21.5.: yksi työpäivä jäljellä ennen lomaa, mukava pehmeä lasku. #miehenelämää #musiikki

  7. A quotation from Gustav Holst

Never compose anything unless the not composing of it becomes a positive nuisance to you.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) English composer, arranger and teacher
Letter (1921) to William Gillies Whitaker

  11. Musical Interlude: Listened to an old favorite today, Holst's "The Planets." A fun work, based on astrology, not astronomy, but fun with its musical variations. (Holst himself came to resent it, as it was eclipsing his other works.) This piece is a favorite of mine; it perfectly reflects a D&D character I used to play, a bumbling, self-important warlock named Nox.

"Uranus, the Magician," composed by Gustav Holst, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Susanna Mälkki.

  12. This version of “In the Bleak Midwinter” (youtu.be/UfsbnewzIVE?si=gsZgdo) was composed as a hymn by Gustav Holst 🇬🇧 and is arranged by super cool, virtuoso cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason🇬🇧 (performing here with his also super cool, also super talented older sister Isata Kanneh-Mason)

  13. While “In the Bleak Midwinter” is about the nativity, it’s setting is in the winter which doesn’t line up with the generally accepted time of Christ’s birth (springtime. Also, it rarely snows in Palestine, even less so in the spring??) and some have theorized that the use of “winter” is a metaphor but.. who knows what Rossetti was thinking

  14. “In the Bleak Midwinter” is an 1872 poem by English Pre-Raphaelite poet Christina Rossetti (December 5, 1830 – December 29, 1894), who’s is mostly known for her devotional and children’s poetry.

  17. If this sounds a little RVW-y in parts it’s likely because Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst were besties who influenced each other. Here’s a really cool 2017 BBC documentary about their friendship and their works (youtu.be/azkV3iZJzFQ?si=hH4DbI) A book about their friendship featuring their letters “Heirs and Rebels” can be read for free here (archive.org/details/heirsrebel)

  18. There are multiple English Heritage site blue plaques dedicated to important locations in Holst’s life like at St Paul's Girls' School in London where he wrote “The Planets” over the course of a few years while teaching/living there.

  19. Holst was an avid naturalist and after being introduced to the concept in the early 1910s: an astrologer. “The Planets” is based on his interest in horoscopes and astrology and likely the 1912 book “How to judge a nativity, Part II: The Art of Synthesis” by famed astrologer Alan Leo which can be read for free here (archive.org/details/artofsynth)
