Musical Interlude: Listened to an old favorite today, Holst's "The Planets." A fun work, based on astrology, not astronomy, but fun with its musical variations. (Holst himself came to resent it, as it was eclipsing his other works.) This piece is a favorite of mine; it perfectly reflects a D&D character I used to play, a bumbling, self-important warlock named Nox.

While “In the Bleak Midwinter” is about the nativity, it’s setting is in the winter which doesn’t line up with the generally accepted time of Christ’s birth (springtime. Also, it rarely snows in Palestine, even less so in the spring??) and some have theorized that the use of “winter” is a metaphor but.. who knows what Rossetti was thinking

There are multiple English Heritage site blue plaques dedicated to important locations in Holst’s life like at St Paul's Girls' School in London where he wrote “The Planets” over the course of a few years while teaching/living there.

Holst was an avid naturalist and after being introduced to the concept in the early 1910s: an astrologer. “The Planets” is based on his interest in horoscopes and astrology and likely the 1912 book “How to judge a nativity, Part II: The Art of Synthesis” by famed astrologer Alan Leo which can be read for free here (https://archive.org/details/artofsynthesis00leoa/mode/2up)
