High above our heads, on the sides of the ochre-coloured walls of Nitmiluk Gorge, are images painted in dark red pigments: of men and women, kangaroos, turtles and snakes. I've arrived at the gorge via The Ghan, the transcontinental train that runs between Adelaide and Darwin:
