  2. The legendary Cliff Stoll gave a talk at DEF CON 34 in Las Vegas this month. He talked about the hacking incident that he experienced and investigated, and wrote about in his book "The Cuckoo's Egg" (1989). He's hilarious, and if you haven't read the book, it's very interesting. The book covers the incident in much greater depth, of course.

    You can watch it here:

However, I was really struck watching it for the bits where part of the audience is visible. I don't know why they're all - or many, anyways - wearing headphones, or why those headphones have a giant illuminated logo on them - but it makes this look like a scene from "THX 1138" (1971), or maybe from a cult.

as long CyS practices the misconception of "need to know principle" nothing will improve, which is sad, even the #TheCuckoosEgg by Clifford Stoll should have educated enough en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cuck

    and there is another view,
    recently #TheCuckoosEgg came up again,
and there a feature in sendmail was exploited by vandals to wrack systems dedicated to science and research, systems my adored particle physicists are using to add to our understanding the universe

sendmail switch to debugging and allowed anyone from the distant to execute command in privileged mode,
it was added by a truly honest engineer only thinking about bug hunting, but vandals like #ChaosComputerClub fools
