The legendary Cliff Stoll gave a talk at DEF CON 34 in Las Vegas this month. He talked about the hacking incident that he experienced and investigated, and wrote about in his book "The Cuckoo's Egg" (1989). He's hilarious, and if you haven't read the book, it's very interesting. The book covers the incident in much greater depth, of course.

I don't know why they're all - or many, anyways - wearing headphones, or why those headphones have a giant illuminated logo on them - but it makes this look like a scene from "THX 1138" (1971), or maybe from a cult.

This is the most endearing talk I have, ever, ever seen.
Fascinating subject matter, of course, lots to learn. The man himself is such a --- I don't know what to call it --- an event? He's an event. The overhead projector! The slide rule! The anarchic uncontainability! The unbounded energy!
Most importantly: the wisdom. The gentleness. The courage. The dedication to passing on the message.
I have tears of joy in my eye.

I first got exposed to emoticons in the early 90s reading Cliff Stoll's book "The Cuckoo's Egg." He refers to
:-), and I was like, "WHOA, that's cool!" ;)P.S., the Cuckoo's Egg was his term (actually his then-girlfriend's term) for what we now call a honeypot.

The #xz news broke while I was at con and almost entirely offline, and what posts I’ve seen are technical enough that I haven’t _entirely_ understood it (I’m a fairly knowledgeable generalist geek, but no programmer), but I’m starting to get the impression that this is something along the lines of a modern version of #CliffStoll’s #CuckoosEgg? One person finds a tiny flaw that, once dug into, becomes a big “holy shit this is bad” realization?
