Texas winters don't get enough credit. While the state is famous for heat, hard freezes do hit — and when they do, the transformation is stark. A Houston Public Library photograph captures tree branches glazed in icicles, a reminder that Gulf Coast winters have their own quiet drama. The South freezes too. #Texas #TexasWinter #TexasHistory #Photography

For those in the south preparing for this winter storm, it might be a good idea to get a water shut-off key if you lose power and your pipes freeze. You can buy these in stores, but if you have a 3D printer, here is a file!

I'm printing five at a time and giving them away in my free store/tiny library to anyone that needs one. If you have a 3D printer and some extra filament, I highly recommend printing off some for your neighbors, you might save someone's day!

Going to warm up for a few days then back to sub 30°. The weather has been nice. Just what this guy has ordered.

Who needs weather stripping when you’ve got old grocery bags? #TexasWinter

Time to empty the rain gauge. Again. Second time this week. My Ozark Beauty strawberry plants - that started out as a lone survivor of last summer’s >100F heat which revived & spread to other GreenStalk pods when temps moderated in the fall, and then a couple of those were knocked out by the Xmas deep freeze - are now about to drown. Though if they make it I’m expecting them to produce some kick-ass survivor strawberries come spring.

These pansies are the only outdoor flowers at our house that survived the 16 F freeze we had in late December. They are cold-hardy but also I guess being covered and right up next to the house helped. They were a bit droopy afterward but have since perked back up with temps here reaching the 60s-70s F the last couple of weeks.

CW: Scenes of vegetative destruction.
What’s left of my fall root veggie micro-garden after the big freeze down here in SE Texas last week. Tried to protect as best I could but it got all the way down to 16F & stayed below freezing for more than 24 hours. Most winters we barely get a light freeze or two and you can keep most plants alive. Some carrots apparently survived but the remaining radishes are gone and the onions are probably all done for as well.

That’s Spring, Texas, currently. Not spring the season though it might as well be. We were in a deep freeze here with a low of 16 degs F just a few days ago. December is drunk.

Due to the recent Winter disaster, my brother has had to shack up with us while his apartment lacks power and water. I've found that he'll use the shower sometimes to wash himself. The thing is, my sponge is hanging in the shower, and it's dry. I don't know how the hell he does it. Must be some trick he learned in the army. #TexasWinter

Doing my laundry at a Lavenderia because we're under water restrictions in my home city (I'm in a neighboring city) and I can't do my laundry at home. One of those weeks, I guess. #TexasWinter
