En quelques jours, des centaines de milliers d’hommes, de femmes, d’enfants et de personnes âgées furent arrachés à leur terre natale et envoyés de force vers l’exil.

From the #Crimean #Tatars to new communities who've found a home here, the #Muslim community is an essential part of Ukraine's past, present and future.
We value the contribution of Ukrainian Muslims in resisting russian aggression and honour those who defend the country on the battlefield.
We also count on the continued support of Muslim countries in helping achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in #Ukraine.

The historical ties between #Crimea and the Turkic ethnic group, the Crimean #Tatars (which we will write about in a coming issue) also play a role in binding Ukraine and Turkey together.
But the Black Sea explains much of the longstanding historical ties between #Turkey and Ukraine. After all, 71 percent of the Black Sea coast belongs to either #Ukraine or Turkey.

Who are the Crimean Tatars?
One of the most overlooked parts of Ukraine is its diversity. The Crimean Tatars – a national minority native to Crimea and recognized as an indigenous people of Ukraine – are a perfect example.

The first thing #russians always did after the #occupation of a certain territory was to destroy the culture and language of the local indigenous population.
After the deportation of #Crimean #Tatars in 1944, russia tried to erase any mention of them in #Crimea. 560 rural libraries and 861 school libraries were destroyed and burned.
860 Crimean #Tatar schools were closed.
Many different manuscripts have also disappeared. Their fate is unknown.
