The “Visualising Conflict/Peace” platform visualises conflicts and peace processes in Eastern Europe, the Western Balkans, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia. It shows how such maps are created and which data, decisions, and perspectives shape these visualisations.

The project was developed by the #IfL’s VisLab as part of an international partnership within the #KonKoop research network.

New database out now! Where, when and how have people protested in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia?
From political protests, strikes, nationalist rallies and mass protests to revolutions, the #KonKoop research network's DataLab just published a new resource for quantitative protest event analysis. The database presents comprehensive information on 51 accessible collections of protest event data: https://konkoop.de/index.php/protest-event-datasets/

The report by Nadja Douglas, Sophie Lambroschini, Michael LaBelle, Vineta Kleinberga, Ana Otilia Nutu and Andrian Prokip is based on the 2024 workshop ‘The Risks of Decoupling: Post-Soviet Critical Infrastructure Legacies, New Challenges and the Societal Dimension’ organised by the research network #KonKoop (‘Cooperation and Conflict in Eastern Europe’), funded by by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

OUT NOW: #KonKoop's new In:Security report investigates how #Latvia, #Moldova and #Ukraine have decoupled their #energy systems from Russia’s over the last few years. Long-held beliefs about energy-generated peace have lost validity, the report shows. Western Europe can learn from Central and Eastern European states and adopt energy policies that account for ‘ordinary’ consumers' and businesses' perceptions.

How are academics & citizens involved in radical events? N. Otrishchenko & colleagues at the Center for Urban History in Lviv addressed this question with activists at the 2013/14 protests in #Ukraine. When evaluating the security of countries in #Russia’s neighbourhood, policymakers and scholars primarily look at top-down state actions. A new report focuses on #security ‘from below’ and finds that societal cohesion is crucial for security in the region.
