  1. Shown is what I believe is a buckle from horses’ tack. The prong is iron, and rusted, but the main frame is undoubtedly brass (non-magnetic and shows as such under a scratch).

    The dog randomly dug this up in the backyard, in an area we just cleared of brush. I could ask my sister if she recalls losing this: we had over 30 horses at one time, but don’t think she’d recall as that was 50 years ago. Happily there were no bones present, so it wasn’t a burial site.

  3. Don't "change tact." "Tact" is sensitivity in dealing with people or situations, related to "tactile." To "tack" is to change a boat's course, from fasteners used to secure sails. So when we change approach or direction, we "change tack."
