  1. Interesting Edutopia article by Cathleen Beachboard, 'Why Students Give Up on a Task—and What Teachers Can Do About It'

I guess not really anything new, but I found it a helpful reminder and clear statement of strategies to use in the classroom:

"Students today are often described as unmotivated when they struggle with challenging work. But motivation is not always the issue. Students begin the task—they open the laptop, pick up the pencil, and start thinking. They are ready to try. The challenge appears when the path forward becomes uncertain and the work becomes uncomfortable.

Persistence is the skill that carries students through that moment.

When teachers normalize struggle, encourage students to talk about strategies, and structure tasks into manageable steps, students stop seeing difficulty as a sign that they’re failing and begin to see it as evidence that they’re doing the kind of thinking that leads to learning."

  4. Happy International Literacy Day. We're celebrate with film-book pairings!

Pairing books & films together can be a powerful way to boost student engagement and get hesitant readers excited about books. We've got suggestions for films to pair with books including Elie Wiesel's memoir Night, John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story The Yellow Wallpaper.

  5. IT’s especially frustrating because #studentengagement *IS* critical, especially with all these dry AF mandatory curriculums. But I’ve noticed a tendency to discipline the room rather than the individual in these trainings- principals should pull staff with trouble engaging, and work with them, not turn us all off by forcing us to watch YouTube videos of an East Coast principal dancing with his students. 2/3

  6. Back to school grump: #aps shared it’s back to #school PD and it’s 1) Gathering the thousands of APS teachers into a room, and 2) listening to a keynote speaker talk about #studentengagement when he works at a #charterschool that declines #IEP students. So, 1) Wear a mask, people, because this sounds like how we start the 2025-26 #COVID outbreak, and 2)This #elementary #teacher will let you all know how #hiphop is going to magically get parents to take their 7 year old to school. 1/3

Tadhg describes how he created 'After LPW Renouf', his Culture Night 2023 audio-visual installation. Tadhg was inspired by Renouf's 'Preliminary work of a new biological station' (1931). Based on Tadhg using this Special Collections' item, I created an exhibition section on UCC's activities at Lough Hyne. shows.acast.com/ucc-library-po #StudentResearch #podcast #StudentEngagement

  13. The flexibility of self-paced learning is undeniable—it’s fantastic for fitting study around life’s demands. The ability to work at my own speed and dive deep into content when it suits me is invaluable. However, the isolation that comes with it is another story entirely. The lack of student interaction and minimal staff engagement is draining, and I’m finding it harder to stay intellectually stimulated. It’s almost ironic, given that I’m studying neuroscience. Our brains are inherently social organs, wired for connection and collaboration. Research consistently shows that we learn and thrive better when we engage with others, exchanging ideas, challenging perspectives, and building networks.

And yet, in this program, the very people running it don’t seem to prioritise these opportunities. The lecturers are supportive, and the content is rich, but the structure of the course seems to work against the social nature of learning. I’ve spoken to my lecturers about this, and while they’re sympathetic, they point out that it’s simply the nature of a self-paced program. It’s frustrating to love what I’m studying but feel so isolated while doing it.

Because educational neuroscience is interdisciplinary—combining psychology, education, and neuroscience—and I have a specific focus on mental health, I’ve yet to find communities that fit this niche. It feels like such a specialised area, which makes it even harder to connect with like-minded people. I need to find ways to fill this gap and get the intellectual stimulation I crave. Whether it’s joining broader neuroscience or mental health groups, attending webinars, or even starting my own community, I’m determined to make this work. If you’ve been in a similar situation, I’d love to hear how you managed to stay connected and engaged in a self-paced learning environment. Let’s make these neurons fire together.

  14. Video essays can make student writing more engaging and effective by combining creativity with technical skills. The Chronicle's article by Michael Blancato and Natalie Kopp illustrates how this medium resonates with students. I believe this approach has enormous potential, but we must carefully balance it with traditional writing to ensure students develop comprehensive skills.
