  1. This is my…second? Maybe third? Time picking up #alcoholMarkers.

Drawn with pencil and then inked. Then, surprisingly, easily colored with markers.

This is the first time I’ve tried to do, like, “dimension”, and despite a little bit of trouble with a terrible off brand acrylic marker in a botched attempt at adding highlights, I’m pretty pleased with how it came out!

Meet Arnov Volk, “Wraith”. He’s a completely legitimate businessman with nothing but my best interests at heart. Or, well, as far as I can tell, anyway. This is an npc that was generated in #ironsworn #starforged for my #soloRPG campaign.

The very first task he gave my character was to rescue a bunch of exiled pirates by bringing them medicine and then, eventually, evacuating them from their now-revealed secret base.

Sigh, and yes, I can see that he is cross eyed. Now.

  19. The thing I like about #ironsworn and #starforged is that I work through it systematically. It's funny, because the point of the game is fiction first. But it gives you just enough...well, paper buttons that can guide your thoughts without being _prescriptive_.

A great example of this is the focused optional rules littered throughout the book. The Scene Challenge I talked about yesterday and the little zine I made for it is representative. It’s a self-contained “resolution engine”. It’s a little protocol you follow when you want to do a specific kind of thing.

The nice thing about having all these individual systems which are, more or less, self-contained and non-descriptive is that you can turn them into workflows.

And I know. You’re thinking to yourself “this guy is nuts. I am not working, I am playing”. And fair enough! But hear me out.

I love building workflows, both on the abstract and physically.

So now I kind of want to make zines for starforged that are all self-contained sets of moves (like Scene Challenges) to enable solo players to have a structured approach to playing of that helps them. (It does me)

But I’m of two minds: I’m essentially just using a system that exists to make a bunch of sort of hyper-specific mini-systems.

Maybe my time would be better spent just making my own game that uses these resolution engines/workflows as their primary mechanism.

I need to think on it. I know things like that exist already. But none have clicked even though I obviously _want_ to like them.

  24. I forgot about scene Challenges in #ironsworn #starforged, so I’m making a zine to help players remember about this really awesome rule that I honestly think shouldn’t be optional.

The images are just the rough draft, really just the layout. I took the liberty of throwing a bunch of trackers onto the back.

I think the layout flow is pretty good; start with an explanation, a quick summary, then a helpful oracle to kick things off, then you open it up and have the four relevant moves laid out each to a page.

Now to just need to write some halfway decent copy…

(To unsighted users: the images are just the layout I described in here, on a black table. It would be silly for me to lay out the actual text since it’s jus t the text from the book, not important for the post; quick search for starforged scene challenges will get you the bulk of the text)
