  1. This is my…second? Maybe third? Time picking up #alcoholMarkers.

    Drawn with pencil and then inked. Then, surprisingly, easily colored with markers.

    This is the first time I’ve tried to do, like, “dimension”, and despite a little bit of trouble with a terrible off brand acrylic marker in a botched attempt at adding highlights, I’m pretty pleased with how it came out!

    Meet Arnov Volk, “Wraith”. He’s a completely legitimate businessman with nothing but my best interests at heart. Or, well, as far as I can tell, anyway. This is an npc that was generated in #ironsworn #starforged for my #soloRPG campaign.

    The very first task he gave my character was to rescue a bunch of exiled pirates by bringing them medicine and then, eventually, evacuating them from their now-revealed secret base.

    Sigh, and yes, I can see that he is cross eyed. Now.

    Nach dem Verlust seines Schiffes sucht Roland Earl Warren auf Lastport Jessica Emerson auf, um Unterstützung zu erhalten. Durch ihre Hilfe bekommt er nicht nur ein neues Raumschiff...

  4. I need to make some time this week to reread my #Ironsworn sourcebook. After wrapping "Book 1" of our #Starforged campaign that's been running for months, @cmdln and I are starting an new one in Ironsworn. Very exciting.

    I also need to go back and read some inspirational material.

  6. The thing I like about #ironsworn and #starforged is that I work through it systematically. It's funny, because the point of the game is fiction first. But it gives you just enough...well, paper buttons that can guide your thoughts without being _prescriptive_.

    A great example of this is the focused optional rules littered throughout the book. The Scene Challenge I talked about yesterday and the little zine I made for it is representative. It’s a self-contained “resolution engine”. It’s a little protocol you follow when you want to do a specific kind of thing.

    The nice thing about having all these individual systems which are, more or less, self-contained and non-descriptive is that you can turn them into workflows.

    And I know. You’re thinking to yourself “this guy is nuts. I am not working, I am playing”. And fair enough! But hear me out.

    I love building workflows, both on the abstract and physically.

    So now I kind of want to make zines for starforged that are all self-contained sets of moves (like Scene Challenges) to enable solo players to have a structured approach to playing of that helps them. (It does me)

    But I’m of two minds: I’m essentially just using a system that exists to make a bunch of sort of hyper-specific mini-systems.

    Maybe my time would be better spent just making my own game that uses these resolution engines/workflows as their primary mechanism.

    I need to think on it. I know things like that exist already. But none have clicked even though I obviously _want_ to like them.

  7. I forgot about scene Challenges in #ironsworn #starforged, so I’m making a zine to help players remember about this really awesome rule that I honestly think shouldn’t be optional.

    The images are just the rough draft, really just the layout. I took the liberty of throwing a bunch of trackers onto the back.

    I think the layout flow is pretty good; start with an explanation, a quick summary, then a helpful oracle to kick things off, then you open it up and have the four relevant moves laid out each to a page.

    Now to just need to write some halfway decent copy…

    (To unsighted users: the images are just the layout I described in here, on a black table. It would be silly for me to lay out the actual text since it’s jus t the text from the book, not important for the post; quick search for starforged scene challenges will get you the bulk of the text)

    Don't force _Twilight 2000_ into a wasteland it wasn't built for. In "Mad Max - T2K or Starforged", I kitbash _Starforged_ into a high-octane narrative interceptor.

    They cover a variety of technical terms/concepts, that I found I use commonly in my journaling of this game. Aaaand they help make my journals pretty and mystical and cool! I found it's in fact quite important to have things be fun and pretty to help me sometimes manage to get myself to actually play a solo game...

  15. Voyages of the Vigilant: An Ironsworn Starforged Campaign, Pt. 4

    Alright, so it's been a minute since the last post I wrote about Eveline Hawking and the Vigilant. If this is the first you've seen me mention this solo campaign I've been running you can catch up with the earlier posts too: Part 1, Part 2. We last left Eveline Hawking aboard the Rookery, speaking with a figure from her past. She just discovered that the electromagnetic storms she flew through on the way to the ship were caused by an artifact. Attempt to Save the Rookery Eveline steps over […]

  16. You know it's a great game when, after the first tabletop roleplaying session, our characters have:

    * failed everything we tried to do;
    * got trounced by a gang of pirates;
    * been marooned on a desert planet with a couple of leaky water canteens, a direction to walk, and a dream;

    and everyone's coming out of it feeling super pumped and cheering HELL YEAH to each other.

  21. Voyages of the Vigilant: An Ironsworn Starforged Campaign Pt. 2

    When we last left Eveline Hawking, she had received a distress signal from an old mentor. She'd tried to quickly get her ship launched to help but the breakers in the engine impeller had kept her grounded. More Complications with Takeoff After her experience with the breaker in engineering, Eveline decides she needs to go fast by going slow and making sure everything is checked and proper. Unfortunately, while checking her work with the first launch attempt, Eveline realizes that her […]

  22. Gaming in Review 2025

    Last week, I did a general review of stuff from 2025, but seeing Endies posts from the Indie RPG Newsletter and Cannibal Halfling Games inspired me to think some more about which games I managed to get to the table this year. My gaming schedule can get a bit sparse from hectic other things, like the spring and fall softball schedules but I still had a good time with a few different campaigns. Games That Hit the Table in 2025 Dungeons and Dragons D&D was the big one of the year running […]

  23. I decided to edit the journal of an Ironsworn Starforged campaign I'm running for posting on my blog.

    This is Voyages of the Vigilant

    I imagine Eveline Hawking as like a Kaylee Frye or Cally Henderson type character, elbows deep in her ship.

  24. Voyages of the Vigilant: An Ironsworn Starforged Campaign Pt. 1

    Introduction to the Forge In the distant future, humanity has fled its homeworld and taken refuge in the Forge, a globular cluster situated 1,700 light-years above the galactic plane. Generations ago, interdimensional beings possessed the dead of Earth and turned them against their friends and their families. When the situation seemed its bleakest, an iron pillar was discovered on Luna pointing humanity to mysterious gates among the stars. Exodus ships left Earth and passed through the […]
