  1. CW: Jumping spider updates

I can't talk about a #Spood without also providing updates on the jumpers.

Claudia, may she rest in peace, is preserved in IPA in a small jar nowadays. Some of her clutches have definitely survived. Not counting the escape artists, or the wild clutches, we have Sam and Ivy. They're too small for "proper" portraits, but I'm going to try and come back to them in a future post. Sam is a lil chubby. Ivy is a lil wobbly.

The one currently pictured is Missy, short for "Lil Miss can't pick a fucking name" (reference to Hazbin Hotel). She hitchhiked on my person one day and clearly felt I was taking her to safety. Which wasn't exactly wrong. She's spoiled and gets to eat many flightless fruit flies, and mealworms and also clutches of unfertilized eggs. She never nated, so she'll lay eggsacs that don't hatch, and then brood for a few weeks before coming out of her ever growing hammock network. She's _fat_ nowadays. And she's very entertaining when hunting flies and worms.

  2. CW: short dialogue after catching a spider

I have one of those magnifying big catching things, and use it mostly for relocating large spiders. Got a big one this evening, and here is some dialogue that followed.

A: "What kind of spider is that? Could it be Mommy to all the baby spoods I've been seeing in there?"

K: "No, it's a different kind, plus look at those palps! Those aren't mommy palps"

A: *takes a closer look in better light* "You're right, those are definitely more like Daddy palps..."

K: "I think the last big spider we snagged and relocated from this area was the same kind, but bigger, and also with Daddy sized palps..."

    A: "Tis' Spood season"

We sometimes offer up a qtip with water to some spoods (like jumpers) but know from experience that male spiders aren't interested in sustenance nor hydration when they're exploring. They just want to **fuck** and often end up close to me (coincidence I'm sure).

And for those that are unaware, the palps are the little pedipalps near the mouth. Big bulbous palps usually mean males. They make a small "sperm web", and jizz on it, then "charge" up the palps full of sperm so they can later hope to fist a mate's seminal receptacles. Sometimes these might break off and continue to pump sperm for a sort of "remote copulation" and in many species, the male is cannabilized.

  3. We get them big at home too, but I reckon the golden orb weavers/tiger spiders/Trichonephila plumipes get a bit bigger up here in Brisbane.

Both of these are females, but in the first photo there is also a male above the female in her web. The males are much, much smaller.

  4. Came across this while on my way home, and only had the phone to shoot with, I think it's a spider having a meal, but not detailed enough for me to try and find the genus/species. #InverteFest #Spood

  5. #CW for spiders

So, in a prior post I talked about Claudia the bold jumper, that was also gravid and has had at least two clutches of eggs since we had been spoiling her with mealworms. She's in a more controlled diet, because that many grandbabies are difficult to handle. Plus she's fond of snacking on them.

Claudia is currently in a "retirement" enclosure with netting along all the sides and more accessible ledges as she doesn't have the best grip in old age.

Pictured are shells from a recent molt of one of the slings from Claudia clutch 1. Being able to have an intact helmet as they molt to i5 is delightful because look at how cool it is!

Also pictured is the spood before the molt, and then a different spood that we affectionately call "Little Miss can't pick a fucking name" because it was funny at the time. She hitchhiked on my person one day a month or so ago, and is currently habitating in Claudias previous enclosure.

  6. #CW for pictures of a jumping spider eating an earwig.

#SpidersOfMastodon #JumpingSpider fans, I am trying to name this male dimorphic jumping spider. In case you don't want to look at the pictures, he's the kind with the black body, cute little mohawk and light brown legs. The #AltText is also worth a read.

    What are your suggestions?
