  1. CW: Jumping spider updates

I can't talk about a #Spood without also providing updates on the jumpers.

Claudia, may she rest in peace, is preserved in IPA in a small jar nowadays. Some of her clutches have definitely survived. Not counting the escape artists, or the wild clutches, we have Sam and Ivy. They're too small for "proper" portraits, but I'm going to try and come back to them in a future post. Sam is a lil chubby. Ivy is a lil wobbly.

The one currently pictured is Missy, short for "Lil Miss can't pick a fucking name" (reference to Hazbin Hotel). She hitchhiked on my person one day and clearly felt I was taking her to safety. Which wasn't exactly wrong. She's spoiled and gets to eat many flightless fruit flies, and mealworms and also clutches of unfertilized eggs. She never nated, so she'll lay eggsacs that don't hatch, and then brood for a few weeks before coming out of her ever growing hammock network. She's _fat_ nowadays. And she's very entertaining when hunting flies and worms.

  2. #CW for #Spider #JumpingSpider and #Mealworm

Claudia has been brooding super hard for a while and she deserved a special treat. I was pleased with this video clip of her getting a mealworm.

Yes, she is indeed named after the character in Interview with the Vampire.

  3. Found a little friend at work today. Xysticus punctatus, a crab spider who was terrified of me but hopefully grateful I moved them to the garden. 🕷️🤎

  6. Today in small garden #spooder doings: I found these three juvenile bold jumping spiders, #PhidippusAudax, each tiny cutie hanging out in their own #Dahlia petal palace. I wonder if they're siblings...

  11. Today in itsy-bitsy, incy-wincy #spooder doings - I'm beginning to spot #AraneusDiadematus spiderlings around the garden. I found this one on the tip of a #clematis leaf.

By autumn the surviving females will be grand gravid beauties, their namesake mottled cross marking evident on their large orange abdomens. They'll be hanging out at the center of their magnificent orb webs or carefully tucked just out of sight, a single elegant claw hooked onto a signal line alerting them the moment something touches their web.

But right now, while they're all so incredibly small and translucent, I'd swear they're made of at least 50% sunlight.

  16. For all the aspects of summer that I dislike, that disagree with my brain, I will also admit that it's more than just an inescapable, uncomfortable countdown to glorious autumn. For one thing, it's when various #spiders gradually become more evident outside - orb weavers, jumping spiders, crab spiders, grass spiders, funnel weavers - and each day includes the ritual of inspecting flowers around the garden in hopes of spotting #MisumenaVatia, the flower crab spider. Today I found one and she is exquisite.

While I understand how these beauties find their flowers (mostly by scent), the fact that these elegant, camouflaged spooders manage to locate, climb (or balloon onto), and take up residence inside flowers like so many tiny, eight-legged, predatory Thumbelinas, always feels like magic to me.
