  1. I tried running #spinrite via #jetkvm, and then tried to run it via a physical thumb drive. Neither seems to work. I guess the next step is to pull the drives and scan them on a second, older PC? 🤷‍♂️

  2. I spent $90 on a copy of #spinrite from @SGgrc, hoping that I could mount the ISO using @jetkvm's virtual optical disc mounting thing. It didn't seem to want to boot to the ISO, so I might need to figure out how to burn that to a thumb drive.

  3. The #Spinrite v6.1 L3 maintenance run took around 2h45m, getting faster as it proceeded, so the initial estimate of over 5h crumbled.

Benchmarking the front part of the #SSD drive now shows it is much faster, jumping from about 100MB/s to a little over 500MB/s.

My laptop is back up and running again, and does seem to be performing a lot better now!

Very pleased with the result ✔️

  4. Over the past few weeks I've been noticing performance declining on my laptop. It is certainly not the #SSD speed demon it used to be!

I decided to let #Spinrite v6.1 take a look at the SSD and it confirmed a significant slow down at the front of the drive. It had an average performance that was about 40% of that of the rest of the drive.

Currently running a Spinrite level 3 read & re-write job, and it is crawling just to get to the 20% mark 😲

Looks like this maintenance really is needed!

  5. Looks like Spinrite v6.1 has now been officially released by Steve at GRC.

I have a v6.0 license, purchased over 10yrs ago, and I received my free v6.1 upgrade offer yesterday!

Bigger drives, better performance, faster access, more hardware support.

Apparently it is even possible to improve SSD performance as it degrades over time.

Support for floppy drives has been dropped, but that is mitigated by the free access to v5.0 that you get.

  10. Am I running all my IDE hard drives through spinrite 6.1 while I have a machine with IDE out on the table (A nicely equipped PIV Compaq).

    Yes, yes I am.

  11. Running my licensed copy of #SpinRite 6.1 on my NVMe SSD, just because I can, before I erase Ubuntu and install Debian. Thank you, @SGgrc. Looking forward to your version 7.

  12. @TWSheppard Do you have access to a PC? (or - if you get the beta 6.1 version, a intel mac) try #SpinRite! It's amazing!

  13. Recently pulled this dead drive from my firewall. It's totally unresponsive, doesn't even spin up.

You know the wisdom: never use the first release of a product? Well look at the Drive Revision!

  14. @cirriustech don't forget that #SpinRite, grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm , is still alive and well.

#WinDirStat can also be hypnotic, but since it doesn't take over your machine and force you to wait, it's just not the same experience.

  19. Does anyone (@SGgrc) know if there's a way to run SpinRite on the Mac (arm or Intel) short of installing - and paying for - Windows? I really want to use it on some drives I have but I do not want to - and will NOT - buy Windows... #SpinRite

  20. rebooted #Gentoo because I decided to recompile the entire system after a major gcc update. Don't have to do that of course, but sort of nostalgic for the old days when we thought it was necessary - or maybe it actually was? I never figured that out.

emerge --empty-tree [at]world took like a day and a half, but finished without any errors. That was a surprise.

Uptime was only about 10 1/2 days. fsck'ed the disks - no problem (but can't wait to have #SpinRite 6.1 check them).

  21. After an update, when the output of #NeedReboot includes all the browsers, the sound system, X, the window manager, all the daemons, and even emacs, that is a good time to reboot into #SystemRescue and fsck the disks. (Related: can't wait for #SpinRite 6.1)
