When the Modan Empire deemed it necessary to land troops on a planet, they would deploy fast-response dropships that would pierce through the atmosphere and unload up to a dozen infantry in seconds through use of cold-plasma lift beams.
Modernly, refurbished imperial dropships are occasionally used as surface-to-orbit goods transports by the civilizations they once helped oppress.
