  11. Another #GamePass surprise. #SolarAsh throws you in without explaining itself very much, but rewards you with a beautiful minimal art style and some fluent gameplay moments… when it works well.

    Reminds me a bit of #Omno, PS2 era platformgame #Scaler and well, quite a few other minimally shaded #indiegames.

    Will give it more time on my #Xbox though!

  12. Good month on Gamepass for me. #Starfield tomorrow, #LiesOfP in two weeks and sandwiched in the middle is #SolarAsh, a game I've wanted to play desperately since I finished #HyperLightDrifter at the front of the year.

  13. Started playing “Solar Ash” last night. The game world is absolutely stunning! Here I’m using its surreal, garish colour scheme with the construction technique learned from Draw A Box’s second lesson.

  14. @lentsius I guess #SolarAsh is likely a lot more indicative of how #HyperLightBreaker may turn out, but I've been to stingy to buy it so far... 😅 Especially since it seems to be rather short. But I'm curious for sure!

    I've been itching to work my way through two years of PS5 games that I've only just gained access too. In which case it'll be #Sifu #DemonSouls #Bloodborne #SolarAsh or #RatchetAndClankRiftApart

  18. @travisromany it's that or take a dive into #SolarAsh on PS5.

    One of them is on Gamepass and the other requires me to splash the cash...guess which I'm I'm edging towards 🤣

  19. Before I pivoted to implementing opaque SDF clouds for #SolarAsh, we were considering using density clouds instead. The problem with those is that it gets harder to read the density gradient as you get closer to them, so I was playing around with having a solid isosurface that would appear around you.

    This worked, but we ultimately decided that opaque clouds were more in line with the visual style of the rest of the game (and easier to optimize too).

  20. At an abstract level, the #SolarAsh shading model is fairly similar to other toon models, but there were some specific qualities we were trying to hit:

    1. Gradients and lots of them
    2. Hard light cuts

    If these two seem at odds, you're not alone in thinking that. It took a healthy amount of back and forth with art to home in on the feature set that would let us hit those goals. 1/?
