Zwei seiner Filme wurden in die Liste der Pflichtlektüre für Studenten der Harvard-Universität aufgenommen, die einen Doktortitel in Filmwissenschaften anstreben – es sind „Schatten der vergessenen Vorfahren“ und „Die Farbe des Granatapfels“. Zu Ehren des Geburtstags des großen Meisters!

A while ago I started to suspect that Wes Anderson is a big fan of Soviet-Armenian film director Sergei Parajanov, in particular his film The Colour of Pomegranates. After seeing The Phoenician Scheme it is no longer a suspicion.

Due to political reasons (he actively supported Ukrainian independence and he was bisexual) director Sergei Parajanov was imprisoned for 4yrs in a hard labor camp despite outside support for his freedom by artists & intellectuals (including Americans John Updike, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, etc). upon his release the KGB countinued to hound him and periodically detain him. He returned to filmmaking in the late 80s before his passing due to lung cancer in 1990

Due to clashes with gov’t officials about failing to uphold soviet cinema artistic and cultural norms “Sayat Nova" was swiftly censored, re-cut, renamed to “The Color of Pomegranates” and the ultimately banned to the point that even the 1969 documentary about “Paradjanov: The Color of Armenian Land” was also censored and banned.
