As the #CoomeraConnector / #SecondM1 motorway duplication project in Gold Coast is nearing partial opening later this year, the "find out" phase of FAFO has started. Local councillors and state MPs, who pushed for the new road are now doubling down and requesting even more hundreds of millions $ to be spent on extending it past Coomera, to Yawalpah Rd, and widening a local Helensvale Rd, or else we will have "trafic chaos", "gridlock", "bedlam" and "ruin".

On days when I take the train to work, I am reminded of the biggest ecological vandalism that was committed in my city by the Australian Labor and Liberal politicians. Building a 6 lane motorway through a nature conservation area, koala habitats, sugar cane fields and literally next to hundreds of homes. In a city that already has an 8 lane motorway, ripping it apart, but no bike paths.

The politicians who came up with the duplication of the M1 motorway idea to "bust congestion" are now realising that it will... cause congestion. Their solution? The usual: build more of it.
It won't work. All local roads will get more car traffic. The new 6-lane motorway will, in about 5-10 years from completion, induce demand for about 120,000 extra car trips per day in Gold Coast. That's a feature, not a bug. You build roads, you get cars.

A video by a young creator about a certain motorway duplication project that fits the "they paved the paradise and built a parking lot" song...

I fought against the Coomera Connector / Second M1 and lost. I lost to the Labor Party who pushed this project at the state level and approved it at the federal level despite obvious problems. I lost to people who value the convenience of driving a car over the environment and over the health of people living nearby. To people who believe that duplicating a motorway will "bust congestion".

@Sydney_Stations - yep, in Gold Coast some people will protest, on environmental grounds, a tram extension built mostly in the median of a 4 lane highway, but be perfectly fine, or even demand, a new 6-lane motorway, going through koala habitats.

The cost of the ultimate road widening project, the duplication of the M1 motorway in #GoldCoast (the 16 km stage 1 of #CoomeraConnector) has doubled since 2020: from A$1.5B to A$3B (~$2B USD). Half is paid by #Queensland, half by the federal gov.
This road (built in koala habitat) will reduce CO2 emissions and car congestion according to the government. 😞

The #CoomeraConnector (#SecondM1) should have never been proposed and approved. It is going to increase car congestion in #GoldCoast.
Some #ActiveTransport design errors:
1. Path only on one side
2. Path on the inside of the noise barrier
3. Ramps instead of tunnels
4. Long detours to get to places on the other side
5. Lack of any connectivity to the other side
6. Motorway right to the edge of homes
7. On-road bike lanes on 60 km/h roads -
This block of land near the river in the Gold Coast suburb of Coomera had trees and a new home less than a year ago. It's all gone now. For what? A motorway exit.

A video from Miser-MicromobilityNYC about induced demand and the nature of car traffic.
The New York streets, especially Manhattan, filled with cars just look wrong, hostile...

Public consultation on "Coomera Connector (Future stages)" ends 24 November 2023. Stage 1, already being built, could be thought as a duplication of the M1 motorway. Stage 2, now planned, enables a car-dependent suburban sprawl in the cane fields between Gold Coast and Brisbane.
https://www.yoursay-projects.tmr.qld.gov.au/coomeraconnectorThis is dystopian. For how it was supposed to be, see the 2011 plan for 2031: https://backontrack.org/docs/tmr/connecting_seq2031.pdf

I am lucky. I own a house. Had 2 calls from real estate agents today asking if I want to sell. I don't. I don't want to be homeless.
There is not enough supply of apartments/houses for sale and for rent, making the prices increase quickly. Why?
1. Car-dependent suburban sprawl. Example: Qld gov decided to build a mwy exit instead of 1500 apartments in Helensvale.
2. Record immigration: 700k in 2 years.

The environmental, social and economic disaster that is the duplication of the M1 motorway in #GoldCoast is progressing. In this section, the 6-lane bridge gobbles up the corridor that was reserved for the 3rd (express) track of the Gold Coast railway line. Afterwards, the #Coomera River here will have 5 bridges for cars (18 lanes) with two of them having shared paths for pedestrians and bikes, and two rail bridges (2 tracks).

@theconversationau - if a motorway duplication project (#SecondM1 in Gold Coast) can be approved with the reduction of GHG emissions and improved active transport listed as its benefits then what chance does any law have against the pro-car, anti-environment lobby willing to cherry pick the data. The current law already requires the projects to be considered as a whole, which in case of this one, (aka #CoomeraConnector) was ignored by the federal government when they approved stage 1.

Stage 1 of #SecondM1 aka #CoomeraConnector motorway in #GoldCoast is being built. The trees have been cut, animals and plants have been killed, the soil has been removed, poisoned or moved. Over 85% of all trips in Gold Coast are by car. Less than 5% by public transport. There is already an 8 lane M1 motorway not far from here. The Second M1 which is designed for 6 lanes, runs parallel to it, in places just a few hundred metres away. #ClimateChange

I fought against #CoomeraConnector / #SecondM1 motorway for years. Wrote a petition to the #Queensland Parliament, organised and attended protests, wrote and distributed leaflets... I lost, the #GoldCoast residents lost, the environment lost. The "congestion busting" people won. I hate cars.

The #CoomeraConnector / #SecondM1 motorway project update: the #koala corridor between the train line and the #MontereyKeys suburb of #GoldCoast have been destroyed:

Made 9 short drone videos today of the first section of Stage 1 of #CoomeraConnector / #SecondM1 in #GoldCoast, from Shipper Dr to Helensvale Rd. The Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area, where the motorway will go on the left/east side of train tracks:

Construction starts on Monday of Stage 1 of the #SecondM1 / #CoomeraConnector motorway in #GoldCoast, #Queensland, #Australia. Trees will be cut, koalas removed. The motorway will destroy a north-south corridor used by the Coombabah-Parkwood koala population.
The first, open public consultation showed that more people were against it than for it. The second, closed consultation/phone survey was done by a market research firm, most details kept secret, and the "80% support" answer publicised.

The #Queensland Transport Department came up with a revolutionary way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions:
motorway duplication!
They want to build a 45km long, 6-lane #SecondM1 aka #CoomeraConnector, along the existing 8-lane M1 through the city of #GoldCoast, koala habitats, cane fields and wetlands... and are telling us it would REDUCE greenhouse gas emissions.
Will the #Australian environment minister approve it?
