As Narendra Modi’s winning margin fell from 479,505 in 2019 to 150,000 in 2024, Article 14 travelled to three villages ‘adopted’ by the PM—meant to become adarsh or ‘ideal’ villages—in his parliamentary constituency and found clues to his diminished popularity: widespread administrative failures, allegations of corruption and caste discrimination in the implementation of his government’s flagship programmes for housing and water.
