Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Davis at Gloucester Cathedral, where in 1910, it was played and conducted for the first time by composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

This is possibly the finest ever performance of this most beautiful piece.

Ralph Vaughan Williams’s “Folk Songs of the Four Seasons” (https://youtu.be/dWetJEGQlU4?si=kQThG6lsmfleffDx) is a cantata written for women/treble voices grouped into the four seasons based on English folk songs from the late medieval period (one of RVW’s special interests) this is “Autumn” which is comprised of the songs “John Barleycorn”, “The Unquiet Grave” and “An Acre of Land”. If you don't know the #Howells quartet. Check it out. The opening theme could be one of the most evocative in English music. I guess it is supposed to evoke Chosen Hill in Gloucestershire. The RVW piece seems to me to have a similar atmosphere, especially the sweeping first phrases in the strings. Good stuff.
