There are many women in this book. Married, unmarried, widows, farmers, housewives, pompous, bright, silly, hypocritical, brave, all strong in their own ways. Also, one very lesbian-coded woman who pops up to challenge Kirsty's assumptions that happiness necessarily meaning marriage to a man. And leaves her with a chaste kiss!The child characters (Kirsty looks after three orphaned children) are charming and realistic, full people in their own right, depicted with respect and humour. There are several scenes with the children where I genuinely laughed out loud. And cried a bit too.
The book is sentimental at times, with the author's hand too apparent as it smoothes out the bumps created by story threads of poverty, sickness and injustice. But those darker topics are still in clear focus. For example, one of the poorer characters challenges Kirsty's blithe ignorance of her privilege as a wealthy woman.
Definitely a book I'll read again.

As a writer mainly in the MF #Romancebook world, most of my characters are #fluid.
I write this way because I genuinely feel like, especially in #paranormalromance and #fantasyromance it makes perfect sense, but also because it's my goal for love of all forms to be normalized in my work.
Some argued I'd take a proverbial hit for doing this in a world that was MF #fiction established (and reviews wise I did), but it was soooo important to me and I never regretted it. 🥰
