  1. Great news: all 26 episodes of Riverside Code at Qingming Festival are available on Youtube! youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAT

Kind of annoying qualification to this news: the playlist is an unsorted mess, with 71 videos including teasers and members-only versions of eps 14-26 (but there are free versions there too). Also, the free versions of episodes 13 and 14 only have EN subtitles auto-translated from Indonesian or Thai, with spotty timing. The other episodes' subs look OK, though.

  5. Normally I don't comment on bad things in C-drama - life's too short for negativity. But this has to be AI! The subtitles have been clumsy throughout the ep, and now this. Inspector Gu is ordering his men to break up a door, so I have a feeling he wants a battering ram - not a "finger aircraft". Why waste all the work that went into this production by not paying a good translator? It's like making an exquisite porcelain vase and gild it with shit.

  10. Once again, this show is set in Song dynasty which covers European late Viking Age to early-ish Middle Age, and they can credibly put a friggin' _reception desk_ on set! Look! It even have soft-cover books! What do Vikings get? Mud!!! Indoors! And a not-leaky roof if they're lucky!

*mutters (kindly) under breath* Show off!

  15. Unfortunately what I love most in this drama is hard to capture in a still; the _acting_ is superb! These three are going ham in the scene where judge Wan and inspector Gu - who haven't had problems with other female characters - suddenly find themselves reduced to awkward 9yr old boys by a woman with a particular attitude*.

'OMG, it's a _girl_ here! And she's pushing us around! What else can we do but obey???"

  20. Judge Wan is basically the stupid comic sidekick to the smart constable in this drama. He's regularly drawing the wrong conclusions, enjoying booze a bit too much, and stealing others' ideas since he can't come up with his own. It's a testament to the quality of the show that even he gets nuance and humanity. Like here, where his help with an investigation nearly went south.

  25. I do enjoy seeing religious habits in C-dramas
1: they're performed by people who know what they're doing (ie while some of it are C-drama inventions it's not Hollywood mashups of horror)
    2. I always start pondering writing a paper or a small article, and then I think "Oh! I'm not at the university anymore! I don't need to!"

Of course, I may still do the latter for fun, but the warm feeling of not having a hazzle to deal with never gets old.

  30. You know, I don't understand flirting irl. And I understand less of it when it starts with ~fisticuffs in fiction. Those two have been fighting for at least a minute. What kind of purpose does it serve? To see if your contrahent have arms strong enough to hug you with?

  35. This show is not as candleholder heavy as an idol drama, but it makes up for it with this chandelier. Awesome piece!

    *taps nose*

And if I eat enough frozen pies I'll probably have enough aluminium trays to make those lion doorbuckles _and_ passable copies of those flowers...

  40. Characters who can be claimed as autistics are common in C-drama. They usually get a slightly better rap than their Western counterparts. Western fiction tend to depict us as weird and outside society, whereas in C-drama it's weird and inside society - a small but important difference. Zhao Mo here is clearly written as autistic, and while he's described as 'weird' he's also in synch with others, and allowed to show feelings.

  45. Do I need lion door ring holders somewhere? A cupboard or something? Because I can probably make something decent out of single use aluminium pie trays, some hobby clay, and spray-on gold. Not that I can match these - they are glorious! - but sometimes you just need to add to the project list...

  50. Another practical costume, but for another profession. Wen Yue makes umbrellas for a living, and needs a exchangeable _top_. She sits with the umbrella at chest height and splatters from glue and ink lands both on her sleeves and torso. Zhao Buyou's sister works with her mess at ~hip height, and most fluids lands at the bottom of her torso, hence her short top skirt/apron (in previous toot).

Her top skirt (or perhaps apron) kan be replaced, so she can stay clean without changing her entire outfit, and the hem of her dress is short enough to allow her to walk without manoevering the skirt fabric with her feet. A+ to costuming, since they've provided her with an entire wardrobe of this kind!

Also - is this a permanent set at Heng Dian World Studios? I'm pretty sure I've seen it in another drama.
