They did an article on me as the featured artist for Friday Night Market in my local newspaper.

I wish I could share it, but it’s for subscribers only, apparently, and it doesn’t qualify for a gift link.

Regardless, it’s a nicely written piece, and it introduces me to the community in a way that is really authentic, and fits into the aesthetic of local-first.

Between this and the poster I made for the event, I’m pretty stoked today! I guess they’ll be selling it as a limited edition print at their info booth, which is honestly a great way for them to raise money—the Humboldt Made organization has been awesome to me, personally, so I’m happy to give back somehow.

I did my first event where I did not make back the fee I paid to be a vendor.

Neither did a lot of the other vendors, and those who did only just covered it.

I’ve never seen so many frustrated vendors. I made eight sales. The last 2.5 hours of the first night there were more sellers than attendees.

Many of the vendors started packing up early. None of the ones I talked to will be doing events put on by that manager in the future.

Lesson learned. There were signs. But I trusted. And now I think I need to be a bit more selective.

But there were still several good things that came from it:

1) I got several people to subscribe to my mailing list.

2) I got a list of new suggested things to draw.

3) I met a bunch of fellow vendors I probably wouldn’t have met otherwise if we had less time to sit around and chat.

4) I now have a bunch of stock I don’t need to prep for the next show I do.

Next up is the beginning of Friday NIght Market on Friday, May 22! Woohoo! I *know* this will be a much better experience. Last year was awesome, and I’m looking forward to meeting more new friends!

I got so much done today.

I made a new greeting card and print listing on my website.

I wrote a blog post and got another one shared on social media.

I got some new framed prints hung at a local coffee shop to rotate out some older ones.

I also got some new plastic bins for storage of some of my vending booth items.

I also wrapped up two posters that I’d been hired to do.

I got some bookmarks printed out so I have more to sell at the Mother’s Day weekend event I’m doing on Fri & Sat.

AND finally, I got most of my “stuff” for my tent pieces downstairs and ready to pack for the event on Friday.

It has been a whirlwind of a day!!

The Godwit Days Festival I attended this weekend was a big success for me! There were lots of birdwatching tours, lots of conservationists and non-profits, lots of dedicated people. I met so many folks that really appreciated what I was doing with my art and it was very validating. I also met many of the board members for the event, as well as the organizer of the San Diego Bird Festival, too.

I’m so happy I went! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in birding in the Pacific Northwest of the US. It was just big enough to draw a lot of folks but not so big that it felt overwhelming. The exhibitors clearly cared deeply about what they were doing and making connections with other people.

I sold many more greeting cards & prints than I thought I would. The organizers were incredibly helpful and friendly, with volunteers there to help us set up and take down if we needed assistance. It was a great event for me, and I am excited about going back and doing it again next year!

The Day a Stranger Walked Into...

Had a nice chat today with a friend I hadn’t conversed with in over a year, and it was really nice. She and I worked together for two decades in the same theatre program, and it was nice to catch up. We’ve both transitioned into personal art careers, and our mutual admiration of each other’s work is strong. She’s doing well and parlaying her teaching experience in higher education into classes of her own.

Ecamm Live did an update, and once again (like the last two times they did a system-wide update for everyone) they broke things and I’m unable to stream.

This has happened three times now with each new major update. They create new features and it breaks. And I really honestly cannot understand why they don’t figure out this’ll happen before they release the update. it’s… exhausting.

So I’m not streaming today. Which was my happy place. I think I will go for a walk instead. <sigh>

I swear every day I live in some kind of fantasy fairytale land up here in Eureka, CA along the Redwood Coast in northern California.

This is literally the city park. I mean, deep redwoods, 10 minutes away from everyone’s house. It’s like stepping into another world. I keep expecting to see some Big Bad Wolf step out from behind a giant tree.

That being said, there are indeed bears.

They just don’t talk.

As an artist, I can tell you that I am blessed with an overabundance of photo reference. Ha!
