The iPhone Duo looks to be an impressive bit of engineering, but we have doubts about its repairability.

so I have this #Macbook Pro 15 Retina 2015 A1398 I got with a buncha defunct stuff. very cool hardware - Core i7 4770HQ, 16 GB RAM, Iris graphics with no GMUX/Nvidia shenanigans, decent condition for a decade+ old rig. came with a 240 GB SSD but I had a 500 GB from a coffee-drowned 13" Retina (seller: "dunno what happened, just stopped working") so that'll be a better fit.

some lunatic "serviced" it, the mayhem inside is beyond words - stripped screws, half a ton of paste on the CPU, knicked flat cables, torn off connectors, a mess. so I managed to make it halfway usable but the majorest hurdle was the missing battery.

2015s specifically have this issue that they won't even boot fully if there isn't a charged battery present, in addition to the usual Apple crap hindering normal use. not too keen on buying parts, so I let it be, maybe another one will come along for parts.

So I did, I scoured the interweb with the symptoms and model in search for an answer.
I finally found some old posts in an old support forum suggesting it might be the power button.
Could it be that simple?
I then found the maintenance guide with instructions on how to replace the button.
The brand does not sell the part anymore, but aliexpress does :). I ordered one for less than 20€, it arrived yesterday.
Here we go again: open, unplug, clean, replace the button, close it up.

I pushed the button, and...

It lighted up. Solid white. A few seconds later, the login screen showed up, my old trusty system was back to life.
