  1. Perhaps this presentation I did for Linux Conf AU in 2020 might illustrate the issues for the Commission.

    #ChatControl

In it I talk about Greek mythology, the Panopticon, politics and Cows!

#RFC1984 : Or why you should start worrying about encryption backdoors and mass data collection

  2. "The HLG seems to have run the exact same conversations that the law enforcement community has been rehashing internally since the 1990s. Only this time they attempted to introduce new concepts or reframe existing ones in an effort to cover their political agenda: giving police forces the most unrestricted access possible to (encrypted) data."

As usual they want to weaken encryption.

Thanks to @edri for their work.

  3. Hi Fediverse, long-term denizens and new arrivals.

I'm Esther and I post a bit about tech, privacy and how stories can help us to help others to understand the dangers to our #privacy by mass data collection.

I toot at times about #RFC1984,   this RFC is still pretty relevant to the now with attempts to undermine #E2E by legislatures..

    datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/

Because of the work I do with @librecast , there's also mentions of multicast. you've been warned.

    #reintroduction

  4. With Commissioner Johanssons recent statement I kinda feel the need to tap the sign again.

Also not here for her trying to insinuate that we are all unhinged, shadily funded sexists.

This law won't protect the children. What it will do is break encryption to directly surveill EU citizens.

It will mean your private messages will be available to the "bad guys".

  6. CW: Monarchy, facial recognition

So along with the dangers of Online Harms aiming to break encryption, police will deploy live facial recognition on the crowds to "detect terrorists" #RFC1984

Let's be clear this isn't about our safety, it's about the leviathan. The existing Inequal social structure with Charles at the top along with the other billionaires.

  7. The vigilance should never stop. With #earnit, #onlineharms, #chatcontrol the legislatures seek to break encryption and read your DMs.

    Back in August 1996 @ietf
thought incredibly carefully about cryptography and the internet.

    tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

Even back then governments were trying to interfere with the internet with weak cryptography.  I love the RFC number.   Read each point. It's still very relevant all these years later.

  8. CW: Chat control, EU

Ashton Kutcher rassle dazzling the legislature while crying out "won't someone please think of the children" . 😒 Coming from the cofounder of thorn. This is an attack on encryption wrapped in a glamorous bundle. Say it with me kids, backdoors undermine encryption and puts everyone including kids in danger #RFC1984

An old video by @tomscott about The EU, UK and the US's desire to introduce Encryption Backdoors to applications like whatsapp.

  10. @estherpayne You're very welcome Esther.

Right now many of us involved in the "Forge Friends" #Gitea (ActivityPub) Federation community are running on very little sleep today, following yesterday's unfolding events.

I know that Dachary has reached out to Bradley there at SFC and as a (stunned) community we're currently weighing options and possible scenarios moving forward.

But yes, I wanted to reach out about the multicast project status and see what meaningful efforts might be contributed, so I'll probably follow up with you later in that regard since you're the outreach PoC.

And thank you for the presentation again, and especially for helping to keep #RFC1984 front row and center in our conversations about #FOSS and the individual's #Privacy, in the face of so much oppositional pressure.

    Kindest regards,

    #tallship

Captain Picard has indeed proven that Resistance is NOT futile!

  12. Speaking about #RFC1984 I'm incredibly stoked to be giving a presentation at #HOPE2020 on Sunday about #RFC1984 and the Greek Mythology that inspired it. RFC 1984 - or Why You Should Start Worrying About Encryption Backdoors and Mass Data Collection
I'll also be asking How do we slay the Hydra of mass surveillance?
    scheduler.hope.net/hope2020/ta scheduler.hope.net/hope2020/ta
One of the ways I would say to slay the Hydra is to check out the excellent talks that are happening this week at Hope!

  13. CW: COVID-19

#RFC1984 All your worst nightmares with little oversight or consideration of just what other data collected data can interact with. Remember the cosy relationship with Palantir who's secondary market is insurance.
theguardian.com/technology/202 "The disclosure comes amid questions from civil liberties groups as to how private companies hired by the government during the pandemic are using confidential data."

  14. #RFC1984 One reason to fight for privacy is because at the moment privacy is a privilege. Law Enforcement has been able to commit atrocities against civilians because they haven't been wearing body cams. Of course bodycams do raise issues about privacy especially with facial recognition. But consider if LEO's don't want their actions caught on camera, why should citizens accept being constantly being monitored by CCTV and our data being collected and analysed? theroot.com/louisville-city-co

  15. #RFC1984 A useful article from Gizmodo detaili some of what Law Enforcement can pickup from your phone. Stay safe, safeguard your #privacy gizmodo.com/your-phone-is-a-go

  16. #RFC1984 If you are American your online search history is the FBI's without a warrant. The article has a list of folks who didn't vote to stop it. gizmodo.com/heres-who-just-vot
Another amendment was voted on that limits this, a bit.🤷‍♀️

  17. CW: COVID-19 civil liberties

#RFC1984 Israel enables emergency spy powers. While this is meant to be during the crisis, look to Roman History to see if the surveillance powers will be shut down later. The cynical part of me doubts that they will do so. #virtualpanopticon bbc.com/news/technology-519306

  18. You don't provide backdoors for encryption for the same reason you don't agree to "just the tip".

    Once you do, you're fucked.

    #RFC1984

  19. #RFC1984 “Most parents don’t understand these issues until something happens,” he said. “You don’t really care about something until you’re discriminated against, or until you lose out to another person based on something you might never even have thought of.”

    theguardian.com/education/2019.

The initiative mentioned benefits people on the hill. But perhaps there are lessons the rest of us can take. We need to encourage more parents to care about their child's digital footprint.

  20. What's my point? The IETF
and other professionals have constantly warned of the danger of enforcing weak encryption for decades. We need to keep ensuring people understand why we need privacy and strong encryption. We need products that put privacy first #privacy #RFC1984

  21. We believe that such policies are against the interests of consumers and the business community, are largely irrelevant to issues of military security, and provide only a marginal or illusory benefit to law enforcement agencies "#RFC1984 #privacy #internet

  22. Back in August 1996 @ietf

  23. #introduction Many thanks to @mwfc for the chaos invite. I talk about #RFC1984 and quite a bit about Privacy. I've used Kubuntu for over a decade, but I may endup moving distros soon.
