  1. 😂 Oh, look! Another brave soul predicting the future of #GenAI like it's the latest horoscope. 🎱 Tim Bray is here, risking his reputation to tell us about Reverse Centaurs and other mythical creatures in tech. At least he admits he's probably wrong, which may be the only accurate prediction here. 😂

    > Uses of AI as tool are looking good.

    > Uses of AI as an agent, not so much

    That's more or less where I'm coming down on it. @pluralistic has a few good pieces exploring the distinction between "centaurs" and "reverse-centaurs", including;

    "Gig apps trap reverse centaurs in wage-stealing Skinner boxes" is one of my best titles. This is the post where I introduce the idea of "twiddling" as part of the theory of enshittification, and explain how it relates to #ReverseCentaurs - people who assist machines, rather than the other way around. Finding a CC licensed modular synth was much harder than I thought, but I found Stephen Drake's image and stitched it into a mandala.

    The profit-generating pitch for high-value AI applications lies in creating #ReverseCentaurs: humans who serve as appendages for automation that operates at a speed and scale that is unrelated to the capacity or needs of the worker:

    But unless these high-value applications are intrinsically risk-tolerant, they are poor candidates for automation.

    Gig workers are dispatched by apps, their faces closely studied by cameras for unauthorized eye-movements, their pay changed from moment to moment by an algorithm that docks them for any infraction. They are #ReverseCentaurs: workers fused to machines where the machine provides the intelligence and the human does its bidding:

    "#ReverseCentaurs," because they're the inverse of the #AI theorists' idea of a "#centaur," that is, a computer-assisted human. Instead, they are *human-assisted computers*, with their every last move scripted to the finest degree by #bossware that they have to *pay for*:

    Take #ReverseCentaurs. In AI research, a #centaur is a human assisted by a machine that does more than either could do on their own. For example, a chess master and a chess program can play a better game together than either could play separately. A *reverse* centaur is a *machine assisted by a human*, where the machine is in charge and the human is a meat-puppet.

    Among the first people to experience this was the predominantly Black, predominantly female employees of Arise, a work-from-home call center business that pretends that its employees are small businesses themselves, and so charges them to get trained for each new client, then fines them if they want to quit:

    In Amazon warehouses and delivery vans, we saw the rise of "#chickenized #ReverseCentaurs."
