🚨 Downtown Chicago saw intense anti-ICE protests, raising legal concerns over vandalism and public safety. Keying cars and tagging buildings could lead to serious charges. Community dialogue on lawful protest methods is crucial. How should we balance activism and legality? #Chicago #ProtestLaw

Some good news for a change:
"The previous Tory home secretary, Suella Braverman, did not have the power to redefine “serious disruption” as “more than minor” in the law concerning when police could impose limits on protests."

[Thread] Oh boy...! I made the *mistake* of looking at the US #ProtestLaw Tracker I had posted on Mastodon a while back. YIKES! Not just state laws, but some pretty nasty federal ones. And interestingly enough, #Maine, #Vermont, #Delaware and #NewMexico are the only states who haven't considered passing laws restricting protest. Many states ended up not passing those laws, but some did... Read on...

Been an absolutely hectic couple of days. Just picked up the book for Francesca Albanese, and I am rearranging my day tomorrow in order to get it to her.
Lots of #ProtestLaw stuff in the foreground and background.
And now, I am to take the bus ride home to leisurely enjoy the new #SP411STAR drop, and play "How Many Times Do I Appear In the Screenshots."

Back from lunch.
Defence is requesting additional disclosure as what they have been given in no way explains the motivation for pursuing the hate motivated aspect of the charges. The police do not want to disclose discussions with Heather Reisman that led to the "upgrade" in tactics, both in the form of the no-knock warrants and the "hate-motivated" strategy.
If this was, indeed, NOT an abuse of process and a rich person calling in a favour, shouldn't they be willing to disclose?
(Also: love this legal team! ❤️🧡
They're fucking brilliant, amazing peeps!) -
Listening to arguments in the #indigo11 case about the discovery process, specifically regarding the conversations between Demkiw and Reisman that led up to the no-knock warrants, kicking in doors (including one WRONG one) at 4:30 in the morning in a matter, as defence just articulated, "caused a billionaire minor inconvenience."
Edit: This is in relation to a potential Abuse of Process motion, and the Will Say.

Thanks so much.
Seems like Rogers/Cogeco, Videotron, and Telus are on it so far.
Bell has yet to implement the order.I can't wait for the damned documentation to be available.
I love me some #ProtestLaw reading.

This is a fascinating debate.
I (not a lawyer) have thought the encampment rulings need to be challenged for the sake of the future, pretty much since day one of the decision(s).
This group is a mix of specialties, including a couple of property lawyers, from Canada and the U.K. (same underlying principles).
I'm glad to be invited to listen in.

Marco Perolini, Amnesty International, report on UK law and judgements:
"The judicial reasoning uses very negative language,
especially towards climate activists. Judges try to
to delegitimise the actions of activists by using stereotypes that are sometimes used precisely to
sometimes used precisely to justify draconian sentences."https://www.eldiario.es/ballenablanca/crisis_climatica/marco-perolini-jueces-deslegitimar-activistas-climaticos-justificar-sentencias-draconianas_128_11580086.html?utm_source=elDiario.es&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Socio&utm_campaign=4d63a49e68-ADELANTO_13-08-2024&utm_term=0_10e11ebad6-4d63a49e68-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D&goal=0_10e11ebad6-4d63a49e68-70547836&mc_cid=4d63a49e68
