  1. Skimming the TMU External Review 2025-2026 Report produced by The Honourable Mary Lou Benotto and Margot Finley, and I'm shocked at how lax and incorrect it is.

    For example (emphasis mine):

Meanwhile the group of protesters outside the building on YONGE STREET had gotten larger and was trying to get into the Morpheus Clinic space. The crowd was yelling and becoming unruly.

    p45

The original venue the SSI sought for its "Triggered: From Combat to Campus" tour was on Yonge Street.

    The actual venue was not.
    Source: Was legal observing.

It's also wild that they manage not to correctly name the event except in one footnote. I suspect the hostile? abrasive? *inciting* nature of the tour name was omitted for a reason.

Also: Adopt the IHRC definition of antisemitism? Yo. What?

I also note there is strangely no mention of the report written and submitted by Orange Hats, which I assume frees us up to publish it and our critique of the final report.

    It's coming.

  2. I'm confused how a workplace investigation into ✌🏾"anti-Semitism"✌🏾 and a doctor's right to Palestinian solidarity being carried out by a law firm that SPONSORS THE WALK FOR ISRAEL strikes anybody as being impartial.

The meeting with Algu and the two other doctors quickly turned tense. All three felt their out-of-work advocacy had come under undue scrutiny. According to notes they took at the meeting, they were told an op-ed Algu had authored — in which she questioned why doctors were being prohibited from speaking about a “genocide unfolding against many innocent families in Gaza” — had made colleagues feel unsafe and unable to focus on work.

They were told there was no formal complaint and no specific breaches of policy had been identified, and that the “leadership supports activism.” When they asked if they needed to do anything differently, they were told: “I don’t think you need to do anything differently, but you may choose to.”

  3. I'm having a "chicken or egg" moment:

I can't decide whether it would enrage my stalker to know who I'm chilling with because they're also prime targets, or are they actually just targets because they're my friends?

  4. Gorgeous day for hanging in the park with 100 of your closest friends.

We need to do this more often.

  5. It's a hell of a thing that people need to request legal observers for a May Day picnic.

The cops are busy defending Patriots Square 🚻.

  6. A really solid article about the state of Toronto protest policing.

It leverages the injury stats that we collect as Orange Hats, but it goes well beyond that.

Policing institutions are highly organized, funded, and ideologically mobilized militant forces that serve the capitalist-colonial global paradigm — nothing they do is (or can be) done in an apolitical vacuum. For that reason, the surrounding social-political context helps us assess the material underpinnings of why the state behaves violently toward certain groups, but not others, even if they’re all racialized.

The above Orange Hats report came just a few days before something seemingly unrelated happened. The official TPS Instagram account posted a now-viral reel in support of the United States-Israeli-backed Pahlavi regime change movement on February 2nd, and noted how there were “zero incidents” at a protest the day before.

The full caption of the Toronto Police reel that has amassed 4.3 million views and 200,000+ likes reads as such:

    150,000 demonstrators and
    zero incidents.

    Thanks to the meticulous
    planning, effective on‑the‑ground
    work, and professionalism of
    our members and specialized
    units [emphasis added],
    yesterday’s event in the heart
of our city remained safe and
    peaceful.

When the police say there was ‘no incident’, all that usually means is no one was arrested. In a reality where fascists and neo-Nazis are protected to roam freely, while pro-Palestinian and Indigenous people get arrested after state thugs drive an unmarked car or ride horses into them, what exactly does Toronto Police claim ‘no incidents’ actually reveal?

  7. FINALLY finished the 2025 Year in Review: Media Edition. It awaits MMH review and distribution.

Now to do the socials version of the injury and abuse tracker:

    58 concussions
    3 sprained shoulders
    3 teeth knocked out
    2 bruised orbital bones
    2 bruised ribs
    1 cracked collarbone
    1 dislocated shoulder
    1 bruised tailbone
    1 torn rotator cuff
    1 torn ACL

And many, many soft tissue injuries, mostly to wrists, arm, and legs, from overtight handcuffs, punches, and kicks.

They grabbed one person's hijab and pulled it so hard that it left bruises on their neck from near strangulation. They took another person's hijab when they arrested them and would only give it back in the cells.

(Edited because the capital B was making me twitchy.)

If you are an activist in Toronto and you need help navigating the legal system (cops/court) that's what Orange Hats is for.

We're also actively seeking politically-aligned* people who are interested in helping others navigate the legal system so we can build more capacity.

It can be something as simple but meaningful as attending a police division with a marginalized person. You'd be surprised what a difference it makes.

Our presence at protests is way less than half of what we do.

Ping me and I'll give you the org Signal contact.

  9. So deeply honoured to have been specifically asked to participate in today's Symposium for Land Defenders.

On a short, much-needed break after Mskwaasin and Dr. Suzanne Shoush just broke everyone's hearts speaking about their experiences with the Freedom Flotilla.

  11. I was with about a thousand other people celebrating the raising of the Palestinian flag at Toronto City Hall.
    🇵🇸 🇵🇸 🇵🇸 🇵🇸 🇵🇸

I wanted to post this immediately but got dragged into a situation with a Zionist spraying at least one attendees with an unknown substance — and getting arrested as a result.

    My function?
Support for the victim in dealing with the cops. I am now a little concerned because I sniffed her coat where she was sprayed, and now I am having random abdominal pain.

  12. Probably the best piece on what happened a week ago at the anti-IOF protest that resulted in the glass in the door breaking and tremendous bullshit in terms of police overkill and media boot-licking.

Karten had locked these people inside the event space, which also prevented others from entering, according to SJP and corroborated by the videos.

At some point in the video, a tall individual appears to break the glass of the locked door, either from inside or outside the room.

SSI claimed one of the protesters broke the window using a drill bit, which was found in the clinic afterwards, and Karten said they “broke through the glass door and charged at us,” adding that “one came at me with a drill bit.”

As pointed out by Toronto journalist Samira Mohyeddin, one of Karten’s supporters posted an Instagram story on Nov. 7 or 8, saying Karten broke the window, which Karten then reposted, further confusing the narrative.

There've been 159 arrests at Palestinian protests in Toronto in the past ~2 years.

Whiny fascists discover exactly what an error it was to attempt a Nazi rally in an antifascist park.

Pretty sure the only thing they accomplished was renaming the toilets Patriots Square¹, which I sincerely hope we keep.

It's fitting on SO MANY LEVELS.

Also, we got a few trophies for the next bonfire to cleanse the park of their Nazi goddamned energy.

The fifth action of the day (yesterday) produced some wild juxtapositions.

Videos were projected on the side of the Bell Lightbox itself and the Scotiabank theatre.

Cops threatened people with mischief and *vandalism* for projecting on a building, demonstrating why I tell people that cops are gonna overcharge and know full well that that shit won't hold up in court.

    The process IS the punishment.

And I would love to announce what we're working on as pertains to the subject, but I would also like to avoid having the "I have a weird, rabid stalker" conversation with yet another org for as long as possible.

It would be weird, though unlikely, to warn someone about the stanky duo, and not have them brain hamster another org into the Great Unifying #CAHNspiracy

  20. I was having a very happy fucking Potato Day, and no, I haven't actually got to the potatoes yet, when somebody sent me this little turd: a screenshot of Tommy fucking Robinson retweeting the Toronto locale for his fascist fucking rallies.

Why yes, that is the very same event that Caryma "I don't know why people keep calling me and my tumefied spouse 'fascists'" Sa'd liked on Instagram.

And oh boy are there counters.
We don't often get requests to turn up at baseball tournaments, but we have now. We've also been "invited" to several other coincidental picnics and parties happening the same day in the same park.

Even Charlie Angus has invited people out to enjoy a day in the park, though he did not actually request for legal observers.
    bsky.app/profile/charlieangus1

Enough organizations have, though, that we will be there.

In a perfect world, there will be so many fucking people in the park, just waiting for the fascists, that we have a repeat of the August 2017 fascist rally, where they were going to ✌🏾"celebrate the anniversary of Charlottesville"✌🏾 .

    Don't remember it?
    Not a surprise.

The response/backlash from community was so immense that most of them didn't show even up. There were so many people waiting in Nathan Phillips Square that the tiny handful who didn't get the memo came to the corner of Bay and Queen, took one look, then turned around and ran.

And then we just had a great big fucking party.

This is even better because it'll be in a park and not in a big cement square.

BYOB? Am I supposed to be bringing a baseball or a bottle?

  23. Had a lovely evening chilling with friends and colleagues. Good people, good food, good music.

We need to do that far more often, just hanging out while nothing is exploding around us.

  24. The thing about this life is just how many funerals you attend.

Too many people, gone way too soon.
    It's a lot.

Unhoused people's lives are cut super short.
Police violence takes people, even when it isn't the proximate cause.
Stress. Racism. Poverty. All are social determinants of health — and lack thereof.

And I would name the one we lost today, but I have really inappropriate stalkers and who can even guess what their fucked up brains would compel them to do to her grieving family and friends.

So all I will say is:

    She was lovely.
    And she was loved.

The world is a genuinely poorer place for the loss.
