  1. In fact, you should probably have two things of back pain medicine:

One at a height you can reach if you can't bend over, and one at a height you can reach if you can't stand up.

Do not put the back pain medication in the drawer that requires you bend over to open it.

  5. I wonder what would happen if the city spent all this money on policing protests, but then there were almost no protests.

    πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

It would certainly give me lots of time to do the things I love. Gardening. Training people. Planning.

Going to farmers markets and canning a whole bunch of jams, jellies, and general preserves.

  6. Also, I'm not sure why people think old people aren't supposed to swear.

I've spent my whole life swearing up a storm.

Is it just one day I'm going to wake up and stop? Am I supposed to be tapering off?
I'm pretty sure I'm swearing MORE now than I did a few years ago.

How exactly is this supposed to work?

  8. Yesterday's old broad slow cooker meal was legendary. Ima do that over and over again.

One package of chunks of half price stewing beef.
Coat in the appropriate Mexican seasoning.
One 500 ml jar of home-canned salsa with corn.
One small 250 ml jar of tomatoes.

Fork flake the beef and stir everything all together when it's done.

Put on corn tortillas with cheese and lettuce from the garden. (And then when I ran out of the garden lettuce just clamshell lettuce.)

One of the best decisions I've made.

  10. I am saddened by the knowledge that I will likely not get to use my favourite phrase of the week before I forget.

    "Cheeky cheeky Cock-a-leekie!"

  13. If I could go back in time and talk to a younger version of myself, I would say:

Holy shit, use that slow cooker!

Why have I not been making "slow cooker strawberry jam" for decades?

    Protest. Meeting. Protest.

I always get asked if I wear socks under these. There's your answer.

  17. And apparently reached the stage in life where I cook lots of things in the crockpot.

I don't know what precisely happened; it seems to be the next step from buying the exact same sweater in five different colours. (Ngl, I have five of one sweater in only 3 colours, and I deeply regret getting 2x cream.)

Tonight is a little bit of an experiment with mustard chicken. I guess I'm going to find out whether this is a terrible idea or not.

I'm still searing the shit out of it before I put it in the crockpot though, so hopefully that will yield good results.

I've had this crockpot for well over 25 years now. I think I used it about a dozen times up until this year. Now I'm using it twice a week, at least.

  18. Nothing sucks harder than when you wake up with a craving for something you absolutely are not going to get to eat today.

Yesterday I picked something off the menu in a tiny restaurant that was one of the few things open on Colonizer Day. And it turned out to be one of the tastiest breakfasts I've had.

Shanghai street food, I will eat you again soon.

  21. Been an absolutely hectic couple of days. Just picked up the book for Francesca Albanese, and I am rearranging my day tomorrow in order to get it to her.

Lots of #ProtestLaw stuff in the foreground and background.

And now, I am to take the bus ride home to leisurely enjoy the new #SP411STAR drop, and play "How Many Times Do I Appear In the Screenshots."

  24. Yo people!
Do not hug others when you have been pepper-sprayed.

    Also:
Wash it out of your hair by bending over a sink or tub.

DO NOT sit in the tub.

DO NOT stand in a shower and let it wash down you.

    Trust me on these things.

  26. (This is going to take a while since I'm photographing it as I do it.)

➑️ Step 2. Rinse them in plain water.

➑️ Step 3. Cut the woody part out (the pedicel, the part where it joins the to the vine) and any spots.

➑️ Step 4. Place on a (non-stick ideally) roasting tray.

I put whole tomatoes on one tray for roasting and partial tomatoes on a separate tray for pizza sauce.

Yes! We are going to roast the tomatoes. Not only do roasted tomatoes taste better than plain blanched tomatoes, they slip nicely out of their skins over the jar and you don't have to do the whole Xing thing and peel them.

  30. Today's awkward thing I said in response to someone making an inane comment at me when I have had insufficient sleep:

Maybe you should arrange buy-in for your ethnic cleansing campaign BEFORE you start the ethnic cleansing campaign next time.

Want to guess what the inane question was?

I am totally going to hijack the #NoFilters hashtag and make it about what happens when my brain filters are not working ;-)

    Sowing anarchy.

    By night:
    Making peach jam.

  33. Several of the youts have asked me why, when I clearly hold a personal ethos of "no gods no masters, no husbands no bosses," I do so many things that are traditionally the role of women.

    I knit. I sew. I cook. I garden.

Well, I also saw down trees, tend a mean fire, and can build furniture out of twigs and twine, classically referred to as bushcrafting, and traditionally considered the domain of men. You just don't generally see it.

Plus, the garden is my happy place.

But, if the shit hits the fan, I'm probably the person you want to be with more than your classic bearded white guy.

  34. I'm going to start documenting random things I hear coming out of my mouth.

    ❝
Well THAT'S certainly a strategy and a thing you could do with your time.
    ❞

These are really just for myself, because apparently "mouth words" and "brain words" are all the same thing as you get older.

    #OldBroadLife

  35. 🌱 Reduce, reuse, recycle. ♻️

Lots of things get new life when I garden:
Old takeout chopsticks; takeout cups; bottle caps; yogurt and sour cream tubs; even old coloured straws serve a purpose (marking pointy things, like the tops of trellises).

Your friends will very happily collect and provide you with them. The problem comes when you've got enough and you want them to stop. πŸ˜„

  36. I was having a perfectly gorgeous Wednesday: gardening, outdoors with the kitties, having a great day.

    Too bad it's Thursday.
I should have been on a bus to a meeting 20 minutes ago.

When I get older, I too shall lie in catnip.

  37. Nobody warns you that as you age, it's a win to get injured in a non-embarrassing way.

At least I hurt my shoulder cutting down a tree. It wasn't a very big tree, probably 6 or 7m (20 ft) high and maybe 10cm (4 in) across at the base, dead standing, very dry (so lightweight), and it would have been perfectly fine had it not got caught in another tree.

That necessitated much waving of arms above the head and some above the head sawing (it wasn't even the sawing arm!) and tugging and twisting to free it.

Got a new saw, though and it just chews through wood (Corona Razor, 10" folding saw).

All this because I wanted some ash for my potato scars.

  39. I feel like I should work on a series called The Old Broad's Guide.

    Like:
The Old Broad's Guide to Marches

After a long week of work and walking, it occurs to me to share that taking potassium and magnesium before walking around is key to quick physical recovery.

  40. I've apparently reached the age where I think things like:
But I wore proper clothing yesterday!

I am absolutely going out in pyjama pants today. Suck it, world.
