working so hard on embodying the slow professor that I haven't even managed to finish reading
Berg, M., & Seeber, B. K. (2025). The slow professor: Challenging the culture of speed in the academy. University of Toronto Press.

Slam back to work (and that was even yesterday "holiday") and getting ready for a symposium I'm on the hook for organizing.
I had the sense to use a Google form (work uses Google for email, enterprise). Ask speakers and others to put in their info (and pics). Used all that to quite readily (ok a few hours yesterday) to put together a conference website (Google site). Wish it wasn't google but for a throw away website for a 1 day event (and no budget but my sweat) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
What a fantastic 'work' trip to Zaragoza !
Seminar went well - and I'm never going to talks where students are present without some science stickers.
I tell students and postdocs (faculty too) - anyone who asks a Q can get a sticker.
Not too many student Qs but after everything the joy when they can choose and get a sticker regardless is priceless. -
I had maybe the most amazing dinner with hosts for a seminar visit. I had only met one of them once before, last year at a conference (and he's not really in my field). The two of them (second is in my field and hence at the dinner) were extremely happy and relieved that I was not vegetarian and more than that - all we talked about at dinner was FOOD!
I need to come back here -
Woohoo! Zoom meeting done!
Now it's off for Tapas
Places open at 7: 30pm and it's now 7:42. Hopefully not too crowded!
Will report on that in a separate thread -
NOA! (NIH)
Not for my lab - but for shared equipment for the dept. and univ.
Phew - from an application submitted Sept last year. -
Post thesis defense of a student whose committee I was on and his advisor (and my long time collaborator), Kris Matyjaszewski, tells him that he is his 73rd PhD!! 😯 (Technically 69th from this dept - 4 were co-advisees in Poland & France before Kris moved here).
And that's not all - apparently one of Kris's oldest (not age, but since PhD) students who is/was an academic somewhere (China or Taiwan) just retired...🤯 -
Ooh! I need to complete some online training (watching videos, passing the quiz) - before the in-person training session tomorrow?! Ok that takes care of the relaxed end to the weekend then.
(I suppose I could do this when "at work" in the morning tomorrow - but ) -
Oh I need to sit there for the panel I'm on this fine Sunday morning?! Ok no worries - my thoughts are already on screen then.

Things I do on a Saturday (and all weekend really) for Science

It couldn't happen to a nicer group of people

Why am I doing this (work stuff) on the weekend?
I can't put it off any more I guess... (I'd like to spend my time doing better/more useful things at work I suppose) -
CW: Swearing
Mindfucked sitting through bias training video [can't speed up] - because 1. it's so asinine and obvious, and 2. based on past experience in review panels people still need it!
Gah! -
I once attended a workshop at a prestigious university in Berlin for women interested in becoming a professor. They told us to wear glasses to appear more competent. How about we burn the patriarchy instead?

Hmmm dilemmas in #Chemistry #LabAutomation
Where do I place the googly eyes on this? I even got big ones (and there are a lot more) + plenty of small + colored ones too.
Help - what do I do?
(I think it should have eyes all over - even on the arms, parts that move) -
if your university defines workplace health care as running groups, good sleep and yoga rather than a manageable workload, participation, and social justice. welcome to neoliberal academia!

grading piles of student term papers in the age of LLMs is making me grumpier and more suspicious than ever. the writing sounds polished but often lacks argumentation and reasoning.
#ProfLife #AcademicChatter -
Grading done (almost all students) and grades uploaded. Stayed up all night (not for that) so we/family didn't have to wait till Tuesday... (to take some time off)

Didn't take my kids (they are waaay past this) - but a bunch of others' were entrusted to me over the entire afternoon.
A lot younger (than last year) - but quite attentive and well behaved. Hopefully they learned a thing or three. -
I entered academia to do good research and good teaching. after 12 yrs I got evidence that this is quite a struggle in a neoliberal system.

Lovely outdoor Spring day home packed lunch at the park + why not, ice cream from store across from the school during the break. Headed back for the afternoon sections for more on chemical (and physical) changes and reactions and molecules and polymers other fun stuff. Great to see the kids get excited - and creative. Ok time go back in and feed their brains

I mostly love my job in academia, but the start of the semester feels like 35 mondays rolled into one. anyone else feeling similar?
