I once attended a workshop at a prestigious university in Berlin for women interested in becoming a professor. They told us to wear glasses to appear more competent. How about we burn the patriarchy instead?

Hmmm dilemmas in #Chemistry #LabAutomation
Where do I place the googly eyes on this? I even got big ones (and there are a lot more) + plenty of small + colored ones too.
Help - what do I do?
(I think it should have eyes all over - even on the arms, parts that move) -
if your university defines workplace health care as running groups, good sleep and yoga rather than a manageable workload, participation, and social justice. welcome to neoliberal academia!

grading piles of student term papers in the age of LLMs is making me grumpier and more suspicious than ever. the writing sounds polished but often lacks argumentation and reasoning.

Grading done (almost all students) and grades uploaded. Stayed up all night (not for that) so we/family didn't have to wait till Tuesday... (to take some time off)

Didn't take my kids (they are waaay past this) - but a bunch of others' were entrusted to me over the entire afternoon.
A lot younger (than last year) - but quite attentive and well behaved. Hopefully they learned a thing or three. -
I entered academia to do good research and good teaching. after 12 yrs I got evidence that this is quite a struggle in a neoliberal system.

Lovely outdoor Spring day home packed lunch at the park + why not, ice cream from store across from the school during the break. Headed back for the afternoon sections for more on chemical (and physical) changes and reactions and molecules and polymers other fun stuff. Great to see the kids get excited - and creative. Ok time go back in and feed their brains

I mostly love my job in academia, but the start of the semester feels like 35 mondays rolled into one. anyone else feeling similar?

Aaaah. Desk reject (with note to pass on to new sister journal) - a couple of days short of 2 weeks. Oh well, at least it was relatively quick. Hopefully my grad student (his first manuscript) will take it ok. I know this is good/useful work so hmmm might send it someplace...higher; we'll see.

had my first group meeting today with the students whose theses I’m supervising this semester. I hope they feel at least half as empowered as I do. dang, I’m surrounded by such a lovely bunch of badass abolitionist intersectional feminists!

Cleaned up and even got a jacket for this 2 day trip my univ wanted me to take (includes a nice dinner with some alumni). But seems like a scorcher here in San Diego - temps will hit 82 ⁰F almost 28 ⁰C 😳

Not so much fun, sitting in hotel room in Kobe, grading papers. I should get out.

Not groundbreaking, but the work in this paper enabled the interesting polymer degradation studies my students & I are doing now. As you can see from the author list, many many people contributed over the years. I count 6 who have finished or are pursuing PhDs plus others involved in other areas of science. Greyson is sole 1st author because he got obsessed with NMR, did all the final fiddly bits, & wrote the 2D analysis. #NMR #iScience #chemistry #PUI #proflife #ProudPI https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589004226005651

Well it's a swank hotel and huge room they've put me up in! Not the greatest view but all the better to get my talk ready. I have an hour before I have to meet the organizers and some of the other invited speakers to go to dinner.
Uh oh! ALL the outlets in the room are for 2 pronged plugs!! Wut? -
Got the idea maybe 2 weeks ago - (because i had pieces in my head for a while - maybe 6 months, and a manuscript near submission) - and this is a totally new possibility - will be terrific if we can do it (a new direction and no prelim data - but that's what the grant (ostensibly at least) supports. Anyways won't be bummed if it tanks but I did enjoy the mental burst and intensity of thinking and writing it up.
We'll see

Yay! Made it to Osaka University. Got off a bus stop before the when I saw where we were on the map. Took a short cut through a lovely botanical garden (almost everything was labelled!), stopped to smell the roses (always stop to smell the roses!)
I think I cleaned up ok! Ready for my presentation soon. Please #AltTxt4Me

How many of the "manuscripts in preparation" listed on CVs are anywhere near a drafting stage, let alone likely to actually ever be submitted? Does anyone actually take anything written in this section at all seriously? I feel like mostly it undercuts whatever other work the person has done.

No issues at TSA - didn't have to take out my ziploc with small ziplocs filled with tiny ziplocs of spices or tubes with liquids
Aeropress and electric kettle packed too (that's for the conference later)
Wish I could get fabric poster done, instead of having to lug this tube around (hoping it won't count as an additional personal item - I'll claim it's part of my backpack - just a long strap-on)

I heard peals of laughter spilling out of the lab Friday afternoon. The students were really enjoying getting soap bubbles to fill with mist from subliming dry ice, left over from the -78 bath for the Swern. I love that they are already having so much fun together. That’s already a huge win for me as a mentor. #proflife #PUI #chemistry #research #lablife #SummerScience
