🤝 Privacy Camp is organised by @edri in collaboration with our partners the Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society (LSTS) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Privacy Salon, Institut d'études européennes - Université Saint-Louis - Bruxelles, Institute for Information Law (IViR) at University of Amsterdam and Racism and Technology Center.

@Damon This #privacyCamp24 conference which just passed covered that. I believe they are likely editing the video for youtube right now. Though I’m not sure if the research reaches the level of scientific rigor you might be after.

Exhausted and with my notebook full of scribbles: #PrivacyCamp24 has been wonderful and inspiring.
-
Thank you #privacycamp24 for very interesting talks and conversations! I learned a lot and found good contacts for further collaborations.

The idea of "weaponising" DSAR is both intriguing and terrifying.

Very interesting talk at #privacycamp24 on how UK has implemented GPS tracking as a tool for immigration control and how excessive data collection and false positives now has become part of repressive policing.
Would really like to know if the UK system is a US/UK "innovation" or if there are (negative) examples also from non-US/EUR or global majority countries.

Excellent argument made by @carmelatroncoso at #PrivacyCamp24:
#Privacy is not about protecting your data, it's about protecting *you* from effects and actions you'd rather avoid. It's a means to a very important end.

Just arrived at #PrivacyCamp24 and got directly dragged into a panel about PETs and big tech with @Seda, @KrisShrishak, @carmelatroncoso, @Thijmen_vg and Donald Bertulfo.
-
#PrivacyCamp24 speakers @KrisShrishak and @ThijmenStar show easily how transparently corporations like #Amazon and #Google use their #PET products to increase their infrastructural power and take over entire markets. 😵
-
PETs - Privacy enhancing technologies. Those which minimises both the data provided by the user and the purposes to which it can be put.
I'm particularly ingested in technologies which can manipulate or poison those data sets.
-
Despite some gaps and unanswered questions this was a really interesting panel on the #EHDS, big thanks to @bisilisib for the moderation!
Next up: #Privacy is Big Business: How #BigTech instrumentalises #PETs to expand its infrastructural power. :trashfire:
Featuring @KrisShrishak, @Thijmen_vg, Donald Bertulfo, and @carmelatroncoso, moderated by the one and only @Seda Gürses :)

@web2brain @CMFrancoise @edri there are quite some algorithmic experiments going on in Sweden, and when hearing Alex on stage I would want to know how Swedish authorities are solving for the issues they claim are massive with the issue of "welfare fraud".
The most discussed Swe case is related to how Trelleborg city in southern Sweden implemented algorthimic decision-making for social welfare benefits: https://www.svd.se/a/70gK04/obehorig-algoritm-tar-beslut-i-socialtjansten (Swe).

@ilumium
I think it depends on how important their demographics are to the overall project.
10% could be an entire ethnic minority, for example. -
Interesting how in #England, only very few patients actually use their opt-out right for secondary medical data use.
Reasons according to Nicola Hamilton on the #PrivacyCamp24 panel: People don't know about their right. And defaults matter.
A consent requirement for secondary use in the #EHDS would have been so much fairer. 🤷
-
By the way, I was about to attend #PrivacyCamp24 in person. Luckily I did not, because I would not have been able to intervene without being recorded and sharing my image with a platform whose user profiling we do not know very well, but we do know that it does it, and intensely. Personal data is shared in unethical networks (which have other purposes beyond communication) without asking the owner's permission on the other treatments. It strikes me that even @edri falls into this practice.
-
I can't believe that despite the fact that the object of #PrivacyCamp24 (of @edri itself) is privacy, they broadcast it on #Youtube, simply warning that "engages in extensive data collection and processing practices that are governed by their own terms of service". Didn't you think of using the splendid #Peertube streaming? I will have to watch the recordings after the fact using #Nvidious, as long as they were not posted on any ethical platform. I miss the live stream. A matter of principle.

Of course #KULeuven clinical #pharmacology researcher Teodora Lalova-Spinks makes clear from the start that primary and secondary use of medical records under the proposed #EHDS is not the same regarding #privacy.
